Avodart shedding??? :(

I am a female so the effect of this drug is obviously greater on me, but I took my first 0.5mg tablet of avodart on Monday. It’s now Saturday, and I have been shedding buckets since Thursday. Like hundreds of hairs. I was only going to take one tablet a week, now I’m wondering if I should just pack it in.

You're on oral spironolactone, I thought that stops dht/testosterone more than dutasteride ever could.


IF the dutasteride works for you (huge if) then it will take a MINIMUM of 3 months to see progress. However, that is the absolute BEST case scenario. It's more likely you'd begin to see results within 6-8 months, maybe even up to a year.

No I’m not on oral spironolactone. I stopped because it made me sick and never made a difference to my hairloss.

Shedding is a process where your follicles get shocked because there is no minituarization. They will need 3 months to revitalize from DHT and grow thicker, Then they will shed again and grow thicker.
Your hair is absolutely fine, I know you have body dysmorphic disorder, but your hair density is perfectly within normal range. Use the treatments and you will be absolutely fine.

male pattern baldness in females has same cause, testosterone converting to DHT and causing baldness. And you need to be among lucky one's with genes to be DHT resistant. Both male or female.

I started shedding on second week of Finasteride. Then I had massive sheds between second and third month. And it all regrew back.

Your follicles are rejenerating. The raeson you are shedding is because you shocked your body with anti androgens and it's resetting it's growth system. Judging by your regiment, you are essentially throwing nukes against hairloss.

There's nothing else you could do at this point, if it failed. And it won't.
If your Doctor prescribed you oral minoxidil I think that's dumb. Spironolactone can also affect your internal organs.

Diane35+Avodart+minoxidil+ Estrogen(even topical) based therapy would do the job imo.

That’s reassuring that you had a shed so soon too. I guess as you know it’s just scary. I keep thinking will the rise is test adversely affect the DHT situation? What if it’s like a Telogen Effluvium shed where they say “eliminate the underlying hormonal cause and it will stop”, and the avodart is that underlying cause, meaning that the shedding won’t stop if I continue? No, I can’t take spironolactone. The stuff is so bad for you. It makes you into this dehydrated, limp, tired, skinny sultana. As for the oral minoxidil, that’s because I suffer from eyelash and eyebrow thinning/loss because I essentially have a weird variation of menopausal Androgenetic Alopecia. My hairline receding massively before minoxidil. But that might be a curse to me as well with all the f**king sheds I have. I hope yOu are right and that the avodart is helpful. After all, I am only taking one pill per week... so it’s equivalent to 0.07mg a day which isn’t so much right? Maybe the equivalent of 1-2.5mg finas? I guess time will tell. Anxiously hoping it works. I also ordered some Zix. I read good things and since it’s fairly natural I thought what harm could it do?

I don't mean to sound negative, but I have a very difficult time believing dutasteride will be able to help you if oral spironolactone couldn't.

Well spironolactone is a very weak anti androgen, and for a lot of women does not much. So they generally would then move up to finas. Sadly th pill doesn’t prevent my hairloss either. I am 100% certain of Androgenetic Alopecia because I had scalp biopsies taken from 4 areas of my scalp with confirmed it. I got really really quick and bad miniturisation within one year of my hormones going kaput. My hairline/brows/lashes had become so bad thah my derm actually tested the biopsies for frontal fibrosing alopecia. Thank GOD it wasn’t that, but aggressive Androgenetic Alopecia is still very VERY lame.

I’m the kind of person who needs answers, clarity and solutions to things I don’t understand which is why I have been so hell for leather about this. I even managed to f*****g totally decode why my hairloss began as male pattern recession (before I began estrogen and minoxidil), because no estrogen = suppresses Aromatase enzyme (abundant in female hairline, not in male hairline) which meant I not only have an overall dht issue but male pattern balding without estrogen and minoxidil. I know this because they did studies on women who received estrogen and Aromatase suppressive therapies and lost hair in the male pattern identical to me. So yeah, I do a ton of thinking and searching and am bat sh*t but ultimately I just want what we all do here which is to find something that works

Hello guys,
I'm also a female (I think I actually talked to Georgie on a women's hair loss forum). 26 years old. Suffering from this sh*t hormonal hair loss for 3 years.
I'm hyperandrogenic (my adrenals make too many male hormones). Fortunately I'm fairly thin and would not be an ugly woman if not for my hair. It used to be very thick and beautiful, growing to my hips. It's still very long but not much left of it.
First my doctor prescribed me steroids to suppress my adrenals, which made me so sick I almost ended up in a hospital.
Then I got on BCP which I tolerate fairly well. But, it's not the strong Diane35, it also made me sick (stomach inflammation among others) so I cannot take that either. Doctors won't give me anything else. Except, I found an internist who did Dutasteride mesotherapy so I started with that approx. 1.5 years ago. He increased my dose gradually. I did have some shedding in the first 3 or so months. It decreased to 25-40 when washing my hair after a year or so (i had other health problems in that time, maybe that caused the delay). It wasn't enough because I still kept losing hair (although it looked better than baseline).
So, I begged the doctor for oral Dutasteride and finally started taking it every other day in early October.
I don't know if I made the right choice. I've been shedding more than ever since the 3rd week. I can't even express how disgusting I feel.
Dutasteride helped with my oily skin and excess hair (I noticed the latter a year into mesotherapy as I think it still gets absorbed into your system).
I don't know what to do anymore.
My doctor (who does the mesotherapy) just keeps saying different things all the time. First 6 months of meso: it will surely stop, it will grow back.....it did not. Now, it's even worse. He says it's falling out because oral dutasteride is not enough to keep my hair without the meso (I tried to lay it down because of the cost).
And I read here that it could be a good sign. But it's falling out from everywhere.
I have an asymmetric hairline (the left side is receding badly) and I have an almost bald spot next to my widow's peak in the middle. My part is wide, I have not worn my hair down in years.
Sorry for complaining but I feel I just can't take it anymore.
I needed to get this off my chest.

Yeah I had iron problems in the past so I'm constantly paying attention to it (ferritin etc). Upping my iron and ferritin (80-100 range) never stopped my hair loss.
As for the mesotherapy, I don't really know much about it. The first shot I got was a solution of 2.5 mg Dutasteride in it? At least that was the number my doctor told me.
Then he gradually increased it to 4, 6, 7.5 and finally 9 mg. It's a strangely large amount of dutasteride but I'm perfectly sure about these numbers as my Doctor explained it to me.

He sprayed my scalp with lidocaine and did the procedure with a mesotherapy gun. One time he did it with a simple needle though. It's quite bloody and sometimes painful despite the lidocaine.

It reduced my shedding from 60-80 to 25-40 on wash days. I gained some hair back but not enough. (I have seen much worse hair loss cases in women which almost completely recovered)
Though I destroyed all that progress by going on oral Dutasteride, my hair is falling out at an alarming rate now.
