Back on finasteride 1mg after taking smaller dose

Hello, I'm a diffuse thinner. I started thinning when I was about 19 or 20. I'm 31 now.

I was able to maintain most of my hair and didn't have much thinning throughout my 20s. I used a regimen of minoxidil, nizoral and finasteride (or at least some combination of one or two of those things).

About a year ago, I had a really bad shed. It came out of nowhere. Most of my crown is now visibly thinner than the rest of my hair. It seemed like it happened in a time period of about a week. I didn't change my regimen or anything. I still have no idea what happened.

I was in denial about it until about three weeks ago, when I decided to up my finasteride dosage. For about 1.5 years, I had only been taking .25 mgs a day, along with lipogaine shampoo twice a week and 1ml minoxidil on my crown two times a day. I never took a stronger dosage of finasteride because I was scared of sides and I thought I was doing enough to maintain.

About three weeks ago, I upped it to 1mg of finasteride a day. Any ideas on how long it could take to see results from the upped dosage? Will it make a difference that I have already been taking .25 mgs a day?

Any other thoughts or suggestions for me? I really regret not taking more than .25mgs a day.

I think you will see a difference. BTW have you had any side effects from all those years on finasteride? Any loss in muscle mass or tone.

You have severe problems with hair loss. Self-treatment is not the best option for you right now. Since you take it very seriously, you must go and see a doctor. He will give you a list of required medicines and prescribe treatment.
You have to think about before it is too late.

No, but like I said, I was on and off of it. And for about a year or so, I was only taking .25 mgs a day. I was in the best shape of my life during that year so take that FWIW.

In my opinion, and this is from years of taking finasteride, there aren't any side effects from this stuff. The depression and sides come from balding and not the meds.

^^^ Keyword: possible. Guys here talk like the sides are guaranteed.

Take this FWIW, but I think I am already seeing results. My crown looks fuller. And I got a compliment today that my hair is looking thicker. I would do before/after pics, but it isn't healthy for me to do that. I get too obsessive about things like this.

My regimen has been: 1 mg finasteride, minoxidil 2x a day, 10,000 mg biotin/day, nizoral 2x a week, and Nioxin shampoo and conditioner on the days I'm not washing with Nizoral. I know Nioxin is basically snake oil, but I figured I would try it. I have a bunch of it laying around from an ex-girlfriend who is a hairdresser

I don't believe .25 mg finasteride is strong enough to maintain hair, on 1 mg you could see if the shed regrowth comes back in 6 months. However you may actually have a new shed since .25 is fairly weak on DHT.

hes not making stuff up, unless you have a mature hairline that wont budge for years .25 is worthless and i think does more harm than good... i take .25 for about a month at one point my hair got worst, my forehead got oilier and i had some inflammation on my scalp, now im taking normal doses and have none of that.

Y'all are playing. I was on 0.5 mg and didn't maintain. I don't maintain on 1.25 either. I guess someone who responds to 1 mg may respond at 0.5 as well, but he certainly doesn't increase his chances of doing so. Anything below 0.5 is just a joke.

I got a ton of regrowth from 0.25mg x3 a week. It not only lowered my DHT, but it also boosted my estrogen to 40 which started giving me gyno after 8 months. When I switched to RU my levels returned to normal.

I can post pics, but you seem to have your mind made up. I'm not here to convince anyone, just wanted to throw in my own anecdotes. My body seems to aggressively churn out estrogen even with small doses of finasteride, which probably helps in addition to the reduced DHT. I've been working with my endocrinologist so I can keep track of things.

I'll say this, though. RU is the only thing that completely zapped the grease out of my hair. The 3 weeks I was able to tolerate 1mg of finasteride didn't even put a dent into that.

Not quite yet, but I plan to make the switch soon. Just as soon as I save up some cash. Gonna have to pay for it out of pocket as it is not approved for hair loss where I live, and even if it were, 'cosmetic' diseases don't get subsidized. Had to pay for finasteride too.

Looking back I wish I jumped on it last summer but yeah, I had to give finasteride enough time to work to see if that will be enough. Ended up regretting that but, oh well.

That's not Fred - Fred writes properly. Spelling and punctuation and all.

And why do you suggest that only Fred would be capable of writing something like that? Are you implying that nobody else shares his bitter but realistic views on baldness? You'd be wrong.

Also, Vincent, what is your hair loss regimen? I see you're on a roll against Finasteride so I have to wonder what you're taking. And I also have to ask is it working. Otherwise I don't see the point of spending time on a hair loss forum bashing current treatments (as flawed as they may be), if you are not treating your hair loss or if you're using a treatment that doesn't work.

I wasn't saying it's FredTheBelgian. There are many people here who use the white polar bear avatar.

your own words arent even credible man, if you're gonna start talking **** about finasteride, dont become a hater. I respect people who are against finasteride cause i was completely against it to before i started. I understand that you coming on here and trying to prove that finasteride is the devil gives you a sense of approval, and helps you justify in your mind why you're not taking it. But dont make a claim and then try to deny it, we all know who you're talking about when you mention the white polar bear avi, dont worry i dislike him too. But i also dislike when people make claims and cant even face them or admit they're wrong.
