hey guys,

Like most of you probably, i have heard of the new scientific "breakthrough" that researcher have discovered. The whole hair stem growing in mice thing seems pretty encouraging. Because i am interested in this i have looked around the web and found various articles about this. I am wondering what any of you think and maybe some of you guys would know more about than i do. I am 21 with a receding hairline only. Been on propecia starting my 6 month, like the results i guess but then again who knows. How far away do you guys think this thing is anyway.
??

There's a few "coulds" and "mights" there, and the dreaded "years". That always depresses me.

I'm new to all this, so I don't know how common it is to see one of these stories, get excited, and then never hear anything about it ever again.

Does is it sound all that exciting to the more long term people here?

It's a good sign when the tests on mice are positive, obviously it will be a while before the same results will be ready for people because you can't do the same things to people as you can to mice. The next step is experiments on people and this is where it gets slowed down. By the time trials and all that are finished I'd judge that a technology like this will be around anywhere between 3-8 years

skullet - why do you think it´s 20 years away and not 10 years away?

I base my 10 years (which I know is fast) on the fact that there will be huge benifits from cumulative research from other fields.

Stemcells are the future - atleast that´s what we are told at my university.

5 years would mean that they have cracked how to implant the stemcells and proper support cells within 2 years and then had 3 years of phase 1 and 2 tests.

I think they are going to crack the stemcells and support cells within 5-6 years and then we are going to have clinical tests for a couple of years and then marketing and stuff. 10 years sounds achiveable.

I didn't number crunch the 20 yr comment, I'm saying, and the news is saying, that it's YEARS away, plus, even when it's on the market I'd still wait at least 5 yrs to see the adverse reactions to this.

Say they do get it figured out in 6 years with humans. Try getting stem cell research approved by the FDA or whomever -- its a very controversial topic.

Dont get me wrong, if there's a cure, I'm right there in line with ya all :D
