I don't have any scientific proof other than my own experience but would recommend people are very cautious with nizoral. I started using it and got a bit carried away with the instant thickening effect it had. After using it every day/other day for about 2-3 weeks I am pretty sure it has caused me to shed a huge amount of hair from the top of my head. I have lost hair from parts of the scalp I my male pattern baldness wasn't affecting.

Nizoral needs to be used properly to achieve the best results. This is what in my opinion is the best way to use it. I first wash my hair with Johnsons Baby Shampoo because it's one of the most gentle shampoos out there. This is to wash out the grease and sh*t from your hair first so your scalp will be ready to receive Nizoral. I think of it like using a primer before you paint a wall. Then I use Nizoral and squeeze a small amount out (If you imagine a circle with approx 3cm diameter, that's how much I use) and work it into a lather making sure I especially rub it onto my crown and hairline well. One bottle of nizoral 2% lasts me about 6 months with twice weekly usage. After leaving it to soak in I then wash it out and then finish with a small amount of conditioner. This is important to prevent the dried out/frizzy/fried hair look.

For whatever reason Nizoral never really sat well with my scalp.

Personally, I have no idea why anyone on here uses it. I've consulted three different physicians, and they all laughed as they refused to write a prescription saying it's for ringworm

I'm assuming you're not on minoxidil or finasteride. The loss in the 2-3 weeks could have been a ketoconazole shed or it may have been due to overuse (in a few people normal use) of Nizoral making your scalp in a bad state (Nizoral is pretty strong stuff). It's one of the listed side effects and overuse could certainly result in hair loss but this wouldn't be related to androgenetic alopecia.
Either way I think you shouldn't worry and have a good chance of getting it back since you only used it for 2-3 weeks. Maybe wait for your scalp to settle down and retry the nizoral at once a week with conditioner and using a mild shampoo on the off days and see how it goes.
Can I ask where you bought the Nizoral from and what strength it was? You need to be careful as there is a supply problem in some countries of the genuine stuff below
and I've read about people buying sh*t from Thailand and places as a result. F*ck knows whats in those bottles, I personally wouldn't allow that anywhere near my scalp.
You haven't gathered very much if anything at all then if you have no idea why 'anyone here uses it'. Spending some time doing basic research on hair loss forums will benefit you greatly and in life generally also.

Hi, Nizoral is generally weaker than than Rogain, right? Or does it depend on the concentration of minoxidil? I read somewhere that its good to start with Nizoral and eventually move towards something else. Would you agree with this?
I've done research and it's turned up nothing, and the fact that physicians laugh at notion of Nizoral as a hair loss product makes me even more skeptical. I'd be interested, however, in some hard studies done that show Nizoral can effectively combat hair loss.

I suspect Nizoral is overrated - there's little solid evidence that it will help combat male pattern baldness, cetainly not when used on its own. One small study showed that it may have some benefit as an antiandrogen when used in conjunction with Finasteride - but don't hold your breath. I'm not really sure why it's been elevated to the status of 'Big 3'
nonetheless as long as you don't overuse it, it probably can't do any harm so you've got nothing to lose really, and it's cheap. I wouldn't use nizoral 2% more than once or twice a week. It is a medication, not just a shampoo, with a strong antifungal.
it's available off the shelf in the UK, but in other parts of the world it can be OTC or prescription only. If you want a less harsh shampoo with ketoconazole in then you could try either Nizorelle 1% or Revita or Regenpure. I use nizoral 2% once a week and Revita on other days
as an added bonus it helps stop dandruff

That's the only study I could find as well, and the uncertainty was sufficiently high that the correlation (if it exists) between halting hairloss and using Nizoral is weak at best. I suspect it's ultimately little better than snake-oil as far as hair loss is concerned.

Try a milder ketoconazole shampoo. Did that one have sulfates? Sodium Laureth Sulfate can be very damaging to your hair. if you want to use keto everyday try one that is 1% with caffeine and saw palmetto. These ingredients compliment your hair and don't damage it.

just an update on the situation. I cut the Nizoral out and shedding has stopped. I am going to use it once a week and as a previous poster advised use a tiny pea sized amount and leave it on for NO MORE than 3/4 minutes. Please learn from my mistakes. I shed a very unnatural looking thin strip down the top of my head where I had been letting it sit for 10+ minutes, pretty sure its starting to fill in a litte already but please Use with moderation

i had doctors tell me n my friends creatine is a steroid
that workingout and taking to much protein would make my heart grow to thick cuz its a muscle too lmao
90% of doctors just read right out of books, none think outside the box cuz its safer to just read out of books and go with the flow

Google ventricular hypertrophy, or "Athletes Heart" and i'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. To say physicians don't know sh-t is completely false, because at the end of the day they have done a minimum of 8 years post secondary and after all they are MD's. Different doctors focus on different things, very much like an electrician and plumber- both are in the trades but very different areas of interest.
