Beginning To Have Problems With Achieving Erections After 4 Month Of Finasteride - Help Needed

I could use some advice from people who've been through the same thing.

I've been taking 1 mg Propecia every day for about 4 months to prevent my hair loss. Up to this point, the only side effect I've noticed was a lower sperm count during ejaculation - which was fine by me. The last week, however, I started getting problems with achieving an erection. I was sick during this time so I thought it might be due to my flu. I'm healthy since yesterday but the problem still persists. I decided to stop taking finasteride effective tomorrow. I have some questions:

1. Should I stop taking finasteride altogether or take a lower dosage for some time before stopping to let the body adapt.
2. How likely is that my erection problems are permanent?
3. If my erection problems turn out to be permanent, can they be negated by sexual enhancement drugs?
4. If my erection problems are not permanent, how long should I wait to see a full erection after quitting finasteride?
5. Any other tips are welcome.

To be honest, I'm scared shitless at this point in time.

ED is not always related to finasteride, i remember 1 time i had fever and a girl wanted to hook up, but my tool remained dead the whole night.

Also depression and anxiety kill your boners, i had 27 recorded days when no matter the stimulation my tool stood hanging like a rotten fruit.

By no means finasteride is a harmless drug it could be pretty much the one causing it, but since you said you are scared shitless right now i suggest lowering ur dose to 0.25 for some days then take a fragment of that to tapper off for a week, you wont have persistent sexual effects and im 99% sure its related to you being sick you will be fine in no time

I think it's in your head. First time you start blaming the drug for being responsible for your ED you will have problems getting an erection from this point on because you will chrck all the time if you get an erection and you will panic and all this will cause not getting an erection.

I get what you're saying but up until this point I have never ever had ED, not even when sick. And from what I've read finasteride can cause ED. In some cases it can even be permanent. I feel as though I should cut finasteride off completely or limit it severely for the next week and see what happens.

Thanks. Out of all the things you listed ED is my only problem. Would you say that quitting or limiting dosages of finasteride for a week would be a good idea? By the end of the week I would know whether finasteride is causing my ED and I could decide to either quit finasteride for good or continue taking it along side ED drugs (v****, cialis etc.).

I’d encourage you to read the thread including some of the research a couple of other guys posted.

Your post mentions ed and lower sperm count (assuming you mean seminal volume here).

It’s true that coming off finasteride will help to rebalance your hormonal system although I don’t think you ever truly get back to baseline again. The thing is, whether it’s seminal volume, infertility, libido, or ED, finasteride is bound to have an effect simply because of how it works. Whether it’s noticed by users is a moot point, the side effects will happen at some level whatever someone thinks.

There are no easy solutions though.

I think it’s possible to run finasteride long term and resolve much of the damage, especially using Cabaser (even improving erectile strength and libido over and above what your pre-finasteride levels would allow).

I don’t personally see an issue with long term, low dosing of Cabaser, it may even be neuroprotective in fact, however I don’t discount the fact there may be.

Ultimately, for me it’s a choice of:

1. Keep nice hairline by using finasteride and use dopaminergics/AI’s etc to fix ED/low libido etc.
2. Use finasteride, keep your hair and see an insidious breakdown of a man’s androgenic function (not limited to sexual matter but other areas where androgens play a key role such as mood, motivation etc).
3. Don’t use it and lose your hair.

There’s definitely no mileage in an approach where you go on and off finasteride to try to somehow get the best of it without the side effects inheren to it.

I have been in your shoes, twice. Finasteride worked for me both times, thickened up my hair, started giving me near juvenile hairline but my sexual function and body hair were decreasing at the same time. I chose the ability to satisfy a woman in bed over not going bald. I do not regret quitting finasteride but it is what it is. I wish there was a side effect-free finasteride option. You have to figure out how much finasteride impacts you sexually and make a choice.

Erections start to improve after a week off. It took me 2 weeks to get back to normal.

Thank you. You don't even know how relieved I am right now. i Have some follow-up questions:
1. When you say improve, do you mean that they get to the point they used to be?
2. Theoretically, do you think that by lowering the amount of daily finasteride (but not eliminating it completely) I could still achieve erections similar to the pre-finasteride ones (so that I could both have a healthy sex life and save some hair)?
3. Why did you have 2 attempts?

I stopped finasteride for 3 months but am still feeling the sexual side effects. In fact, for 4 years prior I've always had low testerone as I got older, however a recent test showed my testerone was fine. So I'm concerned that the 5-a enzyme conversion of testerone to dht is permanently broken. Is there any way to restart the enzymatic process?

1) Yes, i did not have any long lasting side effect.
2) If your sexual dysfunction is caused by finasteride and it is not in your head, i don't think lowering the dose will drastically improve your erections. Finasteride is very potent even at 0.2 mg.
3) Because i still wanted to keep my hair and thought maybe the sides would subside if i kept taking it the second time around. They didn't go away, they got worse and my libido was nonexistent after 3 months. This time i was 100% sure finasteride is not a drug i want to keep taking.
This is my experience. I do not think it is a poison everyone should stay away. It is a miracle drug for those who can tolerate it.

How long was it before you realized you were losing hair again after quitting finasteride?

Have you tried using any ED medication alongside finasteride? See, I want to stay on finasteride but not when it gives me ED problems. If I could somewhat eliminate them I would gladly keep taking finasteride.

Isn't there this study which shows that people have 10 times more side effects regarding the erection when they know about possible side effects compared to people who don't know about the effect?

No. I don't like the idea of needing drugs to have sex nor i believe it would be effective when the main issue is hormonal.

If anyone is curious I have an UPDATE on the situation.

I Just came back from a urologist. He said that the cause of my ED is probably a combination of finasteride and a stomach flu that I've been experiencing over the past few days. He recommended staying off finasteride for about 3 weeks and observing the results. If the situation doesn't get better I should use v**** to kickstart the process. After that, everything should get back to normal, he said.

If you're reading this and you're interested in updates let me know and I'll be sure to make them regularly.

Hi there I think your paranoid ! You already know this has been reported as a side effect so your probably blaming the propecia, my mate came off it blaming same problem, I can shag my bird all night n usually through the day we have sex and I’m 56 in two weeks time ! Like one reply states “ you could be a little depressed or something” that Aldo happens to me from time to time and I thing “ hey it’s the propecia” but then I’m shsgging and watching p**rn again a day or so later!
Remember the saying if you don’t use it you lose it !
