Best Preventive Regime, Least Hassle?

I am thinking about beginning a preventive regime against hair loss, and I'd like your opinion on what's the best regime?

I'd rather not do anything drastic, as I am not losing hair rapidly now, but I am curious as to what options there are, and whether there is scientific proof to back it up (I guess many popular otc remedies aren't proved to be effective).

finasteride ED, minoxidil 5% 2x per day, nizoral shampoo 1 or 2x per week.

Thanks for the replies.

Does Nizoral shampoo do anything on it's own, or only if combined with the other treatments? Looks like a little hassle, some reward treatment.

I guess using is the other two, Minoxidil and Finasteride, is no point unless one continues to use them indefinitely - and when one stops it'd be like one never used them. From what I've read, at least.

finasteride would probably be the best if you don't want regrowth you can skip minoxidil. finasteride mostly helps maintain and regrows some.

Finasteride, Dutasteride and RU58841. Those are your only options.

It boggles the mind though, with so few options for hair loss... why the hell do people still ask for advice? There's nothing else, treatments for hair loss are largely a dead end.

There are PLENTY of treatments being sold. Many just for money. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management_of_hair_loss

Why is it so obvious to outsiders that the three you mentioned are the best ones with the least hassle. Seems like every one of them involves taking them indefinitely, side effects like erectile dysfunction are somewhat common, and if you quit, supposedly, your hair loss would accelerate and it'd be like you never used them.

You write that «there's nothing else» besides those three you mentioned, but Minoxidil is something else that has an effect. At least on me. I used Minoxidil some years back when I was losing hair rapidly, but I was told it was just a telogen phase, so I quit. But it was REALLY easy to see that it boosted hair growth, although only sprayed on the hair, the eyebrows grew hairy and out of line, I got a thin layer of hair on the forehead an inch from the hairline, where it's not supposed to be (had to shave it), even the beard grew thicker and out of its area, an inch higher than before.

The reason I posted was that I saw a headline in the news way back about someone making a living selling remedies agaist hairloss otc (perhaps a shampoo, not sure) and instead of asking about one specific thing, I'd rather ask a general question about what options there are with the least hassle, that's still somewhat effective.

You used minoxidil some years back? If hairloss has been on your radar for some years why are you asking naive questions? You want an easy option? The easiest one you have is acceptance. Otherwise treat your hair like you do your teeth and make it part of your daily routine

It hasn't been «on my radar». I shedded hair some years ago, I used Rogaine for a while, I was told the reason for the hair loss was a so called telogen phase, and I haven't thought about it since.

I am not shedding or losing hair now.

Minoxidil doesn't prevent, stop or slow down DHT's effects of follicle miniaturization. The only things that do, are anti-androgens which are finasteride, dutasteride and RU. So, yeah... thats all you got. Not much else to look into.

Using only Finasteride, and not minoxidil and nizoral, would that work all right? Are the latter two more to think of as supplements to the prior?

I see on Wikipedia that using Finasteride gave 66% *more* hair and not just stopped/slowed down the hair loss, over a period of two years. Motivating!

I knew a guy with male pattern baldness and he went the rogaine route. Had a bunch of hair for a while and then later went bald even with it. You cant stop male pattern baldness with rogain in most cases. It can help with growing hair though and it does that pretty well
Gonna have to agree with hellouser here those treatments he mentioned are about it. You just need the finasteride/dutasteride/RU that is the huge piece to it. There are no replacements for it otherwise no one would be using it or talking about it. People usually dont take drugs for fun. Well sometimes but not for hair

Least hassle with the same efficiency as finasteride : dutasteride once a week.

You would need to take it twice per week for it to be similar to finasteride.

Twice should be a little more effective, once a little less, but still effective, well he asked for the least hassle.

True Vlatch. Still, he should take finasteride ED or EOD at a good dosage I feel. I just saw your regimen. So dutasteride twice a week and no finasteride? Are you maintaining okay? I wanted to add dutasteride once a week but keep taking finasteride daily.

Yes, no finasteride. I took it at the beginning, but I wanted something stronger and I wanted to see if the inhibition of 5ar1 of dutasteride would help my seborrheic dermatitis as type 1 DHT has an effect on sebaceous glands.

Now I don't really think I need something stronger than finasteride, and I'm unsure about the effect on my SD, but I like the fact that dutasteride has a longer half life, and as I plan on taking a treatment for many years, the option of having to take a caps only once or twice a week is pretty nice. I may lower the dosage to once a week in a month or two.

After close to a year, I've maintained well, hairline has thickened a bit but I'm not sure about the top, though I'd be satisfied just to keep what I have now.
