Hey guys,

I need peoples opinion on a buzz cut. If you are thinning around the crown, will a buzz cut make it more or less noticeable? I know that some people don't like the shadow effect which results from shaving the head, however, I feel that this shadow can help frame the face. Therefore I do not want to go for a wet shave. Has anyone used the Wahl Professional Balding Full Head Hair Clipper before?

http://www.shavers.co.uk/shopping.php?product_id=327

If I used this would it give me the desired affect? I want a cut which will make my hairloss less noticeable but maintain the affect of 2-3 day growth.

ie. If shaving my head will make my loss way more noticeable than I will probably put it off for a while.

Your comments and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

less noticeable. by cutting the hair shorter around the balding areas you are reducing the contrast that occurs with long hair and bald areas.

when it's short, like an eighth of an inch or less, it's less noticeable.

If you go with a buzz cut I would stop taking regrowth products. I have cut it very short before and it did not inspire me at all. When I grow it longer I am more vigilant about regrowing and maintaining hair.

I dont want to scare anyone not to try buzzing, but my experiences were not so good. Even though people did like my look (except my mom :D ), the most important thing was that I didnt like it myself. I did also get many curious questions from my nw4-7 friends asking why somebody who still has hair would buzz it all away.

I didnt actually look bad at all, but I realized how important it is for me to have my hair. I felt totally naked without it.

Today I`m just happy that my hair did recover from the finasteride shed that made me do the buzzing. But if some day I proceed to worse than a nw3 I`ll have to rethink this buzz -option.

Anyway, if you feel like trying a buzz, then go ahead. You might like it, or not. You`ll never know unless you try.

RP when did you start experiencing a finasteride shed and how long did it take to recover from it?

It is very obvious with my cut that I am losing it but I don't care. It feels so good and styling your hair to cover the loss or whatever is a pain. I am glad I did it.

This is the style I am rolling with from here on out I think. Maybe grow it up to an inch or so but thats it.

Not sure your trimmer could handle that.

I'm the same as RP i'm afraid. Likewise I don't want to scare anyone from trying it, but for me buzzing was the worse thing ever. I hated the way I looked so much I did not go out without a hat on for the next 6 months while waiting for it to grow back. I was so lucky I had a job at the time where I could wear a hat or I would have been screwed.

Main problem for me was that my hair was always one of my plus points. People would always comment on how nice it was and tell me I looked like I belonged in a boy band and stuff. Also I am from England and really really white. When that mixes with light blond hair it made me look terrible. Some of my friends even joked that it looked like I had aids.

The biggest problem for me I think was that I just could not recognize myself. No matter how long I stared in the mirror I could not accept it. It wasn't me and it was from that point on I realised I had to do something about the loss. At that point it was still in the early stages and I had quite a lot of hair left. I got on minoxidil straight away and soon after started Propecia. Its been a constant struggle ever since but now I'm on dutasteride I think im beginning to win the battle.

Even if I lost it all (which i probably will do eventually), I would not shave my head again. As much as some people hate the idea, I would start wearing wigs over the shaved look.

But I think everyone's different and for many shaving can be a great relief. If someone shaves it and thinks 'well its not ideal, but I can live with it' that's great. Maybe everyone should try it once, but for me once was far too many.

Almost an inch. Going in tomorrow to take it down to a 3 guard again.

i'm guessing you do it a diff length on the sides? 3 on top so what are the sides then?

i'm guessing that because if you get it the same length all over you could just do it yourself with hair clippers like i did last year. i don't trust myself to do different lengths on the sides/back than on top haha.

Typically always twice as long on top than the sides.

I think buzz cuts with the same guard all around look better...fades are from back in the day...haha

if you have thinning hair, then doing it all the same length heightens the contrast between the thinning and non-thinning areas, because most people who bald have thicker back and sides.

I understand that jayman...thats why you have to go shorter...like a 2 or less..if it got really bad then yes do the sides even tighter than the top, but in my case or your case I personally think a buzz cut looks better even all the way around.

Well, i dont buzz my head...I do a 3-3.5 on the sides and the top is just trimmed....I do not consider that a fade either.

I see what you're saying but I think if you're balding, especially if you're diffuse with very little recession like me, that like a 2 on top and a 1 on the sides/back looks great, for example, and preferable to a 2 all over or 1 all over.

i haven't actually gotten a haircut since i last buzzed it on november 5th to 1/8th of an inch.

so right now my hair is 2.75 inches all over, about. it's getting really hard to manage because the sides and back are as long as the top.
