Buzz it and be done with it?

I am new here, and I have been suffering from gradual hair loss for the past 5 years. I have tried nautural things at first, zinc, vitamins A, B, and C, and a multi vitamin. I also use RegenePure DR shampoo 3 times a week. I have read about all of the different treatments, finasteride, Minoxidil, Nizoral, ect. I have not tried any of these because I have read that they cause shedding for a while before any results may happen. Sorry, I don't want to loose anymore of my hair all of a sudden. Plus the side effects worry me.

I am 30 now with diffused NW4 hair, and I am about ready to just say screw it. While I'd love to have a full head of thick hair, I have come to the conclusion that there is no magical product out there that is going to prevent the inevitable hair loss, or give amazing results. (Maybe there is, and I don't know about it. Please chime in and tell me if there is.) I also don't feel like spending hundred of dollars each month on products that claim to combat hair loss, nor spending thousands on a transplant with who know what kind of results. I am not totally opposed to trying something, but at this point I don't think there is really much hope.

Seriously though, I'd try something as long as it isn't going to cause my hair to shed, the skin on my face to look older, or give me sexual side effects. I am willing to give it one more shot. Can someone give me some suggestions to start out with?

What I have been doing for a while now is just getting my hair buzzed short using a 1.5 clipper guard. Lately I have been noticing that my sides and back grow a lot faster than the little bit of hair left on top, so I need to cut more often. My head looks too stupid to completely shave it. Do any of you all here cut your hair really short at home? Can any of you all recommend some good clipper kits so that I can cut my own hair?

hi I cut my hair using a wahl clipper. it's cheap (AU$45) and does the job. If the only reason you don't want to get on finasteride is because of sides, please know that I've read somewhere that it's only 1 -2 % that suffer side effects from it and it's very unlikely that you will be the one of these unlucky people.

I think given the current state of treatments its a legit option. Down the road there might be a good solution, but right now your probably going bald even with propecia if your genetics are bad

It's not just the side effects, it's the shedding that can take months or longer to get a noticeable regrowth. I am concerned about losing more than what I have. If there is anything that will work and not cause shedding or weird side effects, I'd try it.

From a genetics standpoint, I probably am doomed. My father, and both grandfathers were bald.

Is there some sort of magical supplements or pills out there that I am not of aware of? Or is it just pretty much minoxidil or finasteride to get any kind of results?

pretty much only proven results are on minoxidil or finasteride for male pattern baldness the rest are based on anecdotal evidence, but remember any medications people take on a daily basis have some sort of potential side effects but if your completely against the latter then maybe buzzing your hair is your best bet

Ok, here is a recent picture of my head. This is depressing to even look at.:( You can see where the hair is thicker on the sides, thin on top, and along the front there is a strip that still has hair. Is there even sightest hope at this point for regrowth without losing the very little hair on top? Please, be honest.

I'd be interested in trying something, but like I said I don't want to chance shedding. As you can all see, there isn't much left. Which will not cause shedding, finasteride or minoxidil? Like I said, baldness runs in the family, so will this even help in my case?

In the meantime, I have been taking One a Day Mens vitamins and 50mg of Zinc a day. I heard that Zinc can help with male pattern baldness. Should I continue with these for my hair loss, or should I be taking something else?

If I was built and muscular I'd shave it all off and say screw it, because I could pull it off. But I am almost 6 ft and 185 with a goofy shaped head (as you can see).

Do any of you all buzz you hair real short with a #1 or shorter clipper? How should I have the barber cut it so that balding top does not stand out, and the thicker sides will also not stand out?

Hard to say exactly, but from what I can tell you look like you have a good shaped head for just buzzing it. Looks good even that length.

why dont u get a transplant? if u can afford
Because a transplant will not give me a full head of thick hair. Most transplant after pictures I have seen still show signs of thinning hair. If I continue to lose hair, it will just defeat the purpose

You have similar hair to me, I am considering finasteride, but worried too, I think I'll probably give it a go, at least I know I tried then...

I buzz my hair and cut one grade shorter at back and sides where it is thicker and grows faster, eg 2 top 1 back sides, or you could do 1.5 top 1 back sides , helps even out different thickness and growth rate,I need to cut it at least once a week to keep it looking even though as my back and sides grow faster too.

That's why it best to have your own clippers, I like Wahl brand.

Some people without hair loss have to have a short buzz cut a grade shorter at back and sides because light hits the head from above and hair on top stands up so you can see more scalp even without hair loss.
So cutting it a fraction shorter at back and sides helps top look thicker and the buzz more even.
Only a few lucky people with extremely thick hair can have a very short buzz cut the same length all over and it look an even thickness.

well if ur 30 going on 40, a mature hair line thats tinned out is better than a bald horse shoe that for sure

I don't understand the logic here.

1) You're scared of finasteride because of the shedding phase
2) You're considering buzzing your hair down

What difference would it make if there was a "shedding" phase, because you're already going to buzz your head!

In my opinion, get on finasteride + minoxidil, you might be one of those "great" responders. I have seen many people regret not getting on it soon enough. I mean, you have nothing to lose except more hair!
