can one stay as a Norwood 2(actually 1,7-18 ) for the rest of his life? i've always had a v-shaped(or U) hairline. my hairline hasn't changed for 5-6 years(when i first noticed that i had a "receding hairline") now and i have really thick hair. no thinning whatsoever. just completely bald over the templates. :D btw, i'm 26 now...

so what's the deal? is this the so called "mature hairline" and i just had a "bad" hairline to start with? or will i lose my hair eventually or maybe no one knows?

my family is kind of this and that. no one is bald, but some started losing their hair when they approached their 50s. i.e. my dad is a Norwood 3, but was a solid nw2 up until he was about 50. he is 55 now...

Yeah I think male pattern baldness can come in different stages and speeds.

I had a friend who lost his hair very rapidly for about 2 years, then all of a sudden it almost came to a complete halt and progressed very slowly for the next few years.

male pattern baldness seems to hit hard and then gradually slows down.

male pattern baldness varies according to the individual. I knew that I would be completely bald if I wasn't proactive about it. Thankfully I was able to do something about it and my hairloss has come to a stop, I believe, because of the treatment that I am using.

YEs male pattern baldness is different for everyone. There have been reports that male pattern baldness has completely stopped for some and started again a few years later

MY own Grandad (maternal side) didnt went beyond a Norwood 2.5 at age 55-60

I'd still be safe, even if you think it's stopped, and take finasteride anyway unless your doctor has determined you've stopped losing your hair. Sometimes you think you've slowed down and before you know it, it's much worse.

In some people their hair loss starts and then all of a sudden it stops. So yes it is possible that the hair loss will stop at NW2. If that was the case with all people on this board then there would be a lot of very happy people on this site.....

I lost SO much hair in one year it wasn't funny. Its almost as if I've lost nothing at all in the past 4 years. I'd feel A LOT better if my dad was a Norwood 3 at 50, but sadly enough..he was like a Norwood 6 at 30. Family is the best way to look at it. Of course you never know, but it seems very simple. THe more bald genes you have in your pool, the better your chances of losing your hair. It's like the NBA lottery and I'm the Atlanta Hawks.

ok, thanks. then i won't start taking anything. no reason to get propecia or anything like that, if i'm not losing my hair. if i start losing my hair later(35-40) i don't care. losing your hair isn't that bad, unless it is at an early age. older people shouldn't have any problems going bald. it's pretty natural...

so no one knows how long one can "live" as a Norwood 1,7-1,8 or if it can last forever? if i could make it until i was 40 i'd be one happy camper.

Yes, it may stop for life.... or it may not

hey evildude,
most non-balding men past 30 are NW2 anyway, and they stay like that throughout life without losing any further appreciable amount of hair. The "mature" hairline is a NW2, its a slight minimal degree of male pattern baldness that happens to nearly everybody, whether they are destined to go bald later or not. Your Norwood "1.8" sounds fine, u are 26 right? When did your temples recede? Was it rapid (in less than a year) or slow (over several years) If the rest of your hairline and overall hair is nice and thick and your recession seems to have stopped for the past year or so, then its most likely just a mature hairline. But there is still no guarantee that you will NEVER go bald ... male pattern baldness COULD kick in any time later. You have a guess as to whether you will go bald or not by looking at your dad and both granddads, possibly your uncles as well, to see whose pattern you most closely resemble- and even that is just a guess, not a surety. Remember, ANY stage of hair loss can remain stable - its not necessary that if u move a little past a NW2, that u'll be a NW7 someday. I've seen several men who are stable NW3's who will most likely stay there for the rest of their lives. Its also possible to be stable NW4 or NW5 (but these are comparatively rare) or stable NW6 (quite common). Not everybody who is balding will end up NW7.There are many who will, but many who won't as well.
Cheers,
Arjun

thanks. guess i'll just have to wait and see then.

my hair is too thick. hard to style. i don't know when my hairline receded. i noticed it first 6 years ago, but i think i've always had a v-shaped hairline. i haven't lost any hair in these past 6 years i've "known" about my hairline. my crown is perfect and so is the front(except for the templates). thick and solid everywhere...

really glad i didn't listen to you. two years later and my hair is pretty much exactly as it was back then, without taking finasteride. no visual difference, judging by looking at old photos...

I'm almost certain that you've simply changed from a juevenile hairline to a mature/adult hairline (extremly common in the late teens - mid twenties) you will probably stay this way until old age, chances are its not m.p.b at all.
Many make the mistake ofv seeing this happen and convincing themselves that their starting to go bald.

I read somewhere that the mature hairline happens most commonly between the ages of 19 and 29....is that true?

I first posted (about 7 months back)on behalf of my son for whom finastride, nizoral and Proxiphen seem to be helping. We will give a report after one year with photos. But back to the question, when I was 41 I had a small amount of receding at the front and a smallish but obvious bald patch on the crown. This stayed stable for 11 years until last year when I started losing hair at a fast rate. So 11 years maintenace with no 'regime'.
