That until this past semester. Things became stressful and I adapted heavy coffee drinking during the past 3 months or so to endure it. It was hard.

The hardest, though, is the fact I had stellar results using finasteride alone and the ocassional application of nizoral. I've always loved coffee, been a drinker my entire life. But it's until now I develop such quantities of coffee drinking. 3-4 MUGS a day.

Ever since my hair has been thinning like crazy and I found a huge spot in the front of my head, a little bit above my hairline. It's depressing after such amazing results I had...

Can't help but blame it on coffee and stress. So is there any proven relation between coffee and hair loss?

No.

If you are not getting correct sleep it might have some effect but I doubt it's relevant unless you are seriously sleep deprived.

I would say coffee does not aggravate hair loss. Nothing has been scientifically proven about any correlation between the two, at least to my knowledge.

I just quit coffee a month ago after being a heavy coffee drinker for 6-7years. Usually 3-5cups a day, never a day without coffee. However, i really doubt it does anything for hairloss.

Like 99 percent of male pattern baldness stuff the truth is no one knows. My guess is like most things it doesnt matter much either way. If you like it then drink it
Drinking something with caffeine, and using it topically in say a shampoo could be two totally different things. Caffeine could help with androgens somehow topically and do nothing in the same amounts taken internally. Not to say it works or doesnt. I have no idea.

Loads of not-so-great advice above, I have to say.

-1- Caffeine absolutely does raise cortisol levels, and overconsumption of cafffeinated beverages like coffee could contribute to it.

-2- You mentioned being under a lot of stress -- this is even more likely a factor. The prior post about stress not causing hair loss is beyond absurd.

Nothing except steroids, and having the male pattern baldness gene aggravate hair loss.

I agree with stress - I went through a long period of stress myself and definitely accelerated my hair loss - not sure about coffee, i drink a lot of it but could not do a relation with hair loss

Hi! In regards to your question between the correlation between caffeine and hairloss the answer is yes.

Caffeine in studies has been shown to decrease the bodies ability to absorb vitamins such as Zinc. In order to have healthy hair obviously it's required the body has the right nutritional ballance. There are studies online that can easily be googled.

Wouldn't coffee possibly aggrevate hair loss in theory?
Coffee raises cortisol (stress hormone) which may cause a hormonal imbalance (if cortisol is excessivly produced) leading to greater production of DHT and thus Hair loss?

Also to the OP, have you experenced any side effects from finasteride?

More likely its just the stress, its relation to your immune system, your hormones, and the testosterone.

Just wanted to add my experience as a female.

I started drinking coffee and tea in my teens (many moons ago) and my hair condition was poor, it was brittle and thin although I didn't realize it was thin at the time, it was just my normal hair as far as I was concerned. I also assumed colouring it didn't help either.

Fast forward to my early twenties I decided to quit tea and coffee. After about two-three months I was washing my hair and I noticed it felt like I was wearing a thick hairy cap on my scalp. New hairs were poking through and there were a LOT of them. I never connected this to the tea or coffee at the time.

Fast forward another couple of years (still off the tea and coffee) and my hair is half way down my back thicker and stronger that it has ever been in my life and I was still colouring it and using cheap shampoo.
At some point I started drinking coffee again, slowly my hair started thinning and growth slowed down. I don’t think it is the caffeine as I still had diet drinks with caffeine in.

Now, without going on and on about all my different experiments, what I have found over the years is that it is not just tea and coffee but when I eat and drink foods that are high in phytoestrogens it will affect my hair. When I stay away from phytoestrogenic foods or only take them sparingly my hair is in great condition. Excess dairy can be a problem too.

When I was at Uni and pretty much lived on stress, cigarettes, chips and diet Coke I had lovely hair, when I went through my ‘healthy eating’ phase which included lots of green tea, soy, flax seeds etc my scalp was itchy and my hair was poor. I now eat a balanced diet minus the most phytoestrogenic foods and that works for me.

I understand that sounds strange and I very much doubt that this is the case with everyone but in some people who may have a minor hormone imbalance it could be very significant.

Phytoestrogens can be a double edge sword, in some people they help increase estrogen levels and in other people they block the estrogen receptor lowering your natural estrogen. I think that is what was going on with me.

So if you are someone who has hair loss or thinning and you drink a lot of tea and coffee (both phytoestrogenic) or eat lots of phytoestrogenic foods it might be interesting to cut them out or at least right down for a couple of months as an experiment.

Just my experience.

Coffee has been shown to increase blood pressure and decrease blood flow to skin and brain by as much as 30%. By considering this effect only, it might not be so far fetched that coffee or caffeine could affect your hair growth.

In addition to this, coffee raises your cortisol levels (stress hormone) and stress has a negative effect on hairgrowth and a host of other disorders.

Finally, coffee also makes you insulin resistant for a period of time after consumption, with up to 50% reduction leading to elevated levels of blood sugar. A constant consumption of coffee and or caffeine can therefore maintain this situation leading to constantly elevated blood sugar. high blood sugar creates a procuct known as glycosylated hemoglobin which leads to further circulation problems by blocking small blood vessels.

We are all different and depending on your insulin sensitivity level, stress level, diet and genetics I find it very likely that excessive coffee and caffeine consumption could affect hair growth.

I have always noticed a huge increase in shedding when I drink coffee. Not as bad with tea, but still some. I had long, beautiful hair when I was young, but it has thinned out so much with age. I was wanting to give up coffee altogether because of my hair. Hair loss is genetic as my husband has super thick hair and he drinks a ton of coffee. But if you are prone to hormonal imbalances and hair loss, caffeine and coffee DEFINITELY make it worse, as well as increase stress hormones.

Maybe this is stupid to ask, but if stress causes hair loss why would stress not cause body hair to fall out too? People say stuff like wearing hats too much or pulling on hair can cause baldness, but if you yank out body hair as many do it always comes back
Are there a lot of genetic differences between body hair and head hair?

No. If it did, I would be completely bald by now.

Actually, caffeine has been shown to have the opposite effect in some people. But I doubt it can regrow hair.

I use Cell u plex to thicken my strands. Won't grow your hair back though. Cell u plex has caffeine in it.

I’m in the boat that coffee absolutely does aggravate hair loss, at least for me it does. I’ve noticed on three or four separate occasions over the past couple of years that sustained periods of drinking a couple of coffees a day has resulted in extra hair shed in the shower, and it’s definitely the only thing I can pinpoint as the culprit.
