Can male pattern baldness slow down?

I have a friend who told me he lost his hair very rapidly for about a year then his male pattern baldness almost came to a halt and progressed very very slowly for the next couple of years. He wasn't taking any drugs or medication.

I was just wondering if male pattern baldness can slow down all by itself?

Speaking from expierence, I would agree. I lost a lot of my hair within the span of a couple months, but then it slowed down.

I wouldn't rely on this happening though. I started taking proscar, and I think anyone starting to lose their hair whos cares about it, should take some form of fisternanide as well.

Windy City Hair, your friend is absolutely right.

Well, I suppose it may vary from person to person, but my male pattern baldness definitely came in a few distinct cycles of recession, in between long periods of solid hairline maintenance.

At about 19, my temples thinned very quickly. By 21 I had a mild 'widows peak' look. However, it stopped, and I kept that same hairline until well after college. Then, another round of thinning that left me with an early-Bruce Willis look at age 27, then it stopped.

I only started a regimen at age 33, a year and a half ago, when my hair started to thin again, this time in the center forehead area. I don't mind a widows peak or high temples, but I am not letting my frontal forehead area go. I'm kinda glad I waited, now I am introducing the minoxidil to the hair at the time when I really need it. I saved a bucket load of money, and if I started minoxidil back then I would have been well on the downside of the minoxidil curve at this point of my life.

In my opinion comb over styles, perms, hair dye and all that avoid the natural sebum flow can speed up the baldness process.

I do think the rate of male pattern baldness seems to come and go. This is one thing that makes me paranoid about finasteride. If male pattern baldness is coming and going, could some of us think we are seeing results but in reality it is just a good couple of hair months. I mean, now that we are taking finasteride we are looking at our hairlines on a day to day basis so we notice even the slightest improvement when in reality it could just be a slow month for the hate male pattern baldness gene. No??

I seem to be expereincing this......

STAGE 1:at 21, temple recede...
STAGE 2 :then a year later hair started falling out but not specificially in a certain location, seems to be consistent overall...noticed that hduring this perios hair started to thin....

STAGE 3: than a year later hair seesm to be have regrown slightly but still expereincing shedding......

STAGE 4: At this point the male pattern baldness have been stabilised and conuining at a steady rate till now...no visible deterioration...NOW ON finasteride FOR 3 MONTHS

I stongly feel that male pattern baldness seems to come in waves....and stabilises after a certain period of time....maybe due to the body 'waking" to do something about the issue....As someone mentioned that this might lead to illusionary results while on finasteride...but i disagree...cause once male pattern baldness attacks, Hair will keep falling out no matter what....this is for true male pattern baldness..so long hair shedding stops...finasteride is working........i dont know if your friend is suffering from male pattern baldness or some other causes like Telogen Effluvium....Certain Telogen Effluvium exibits male pattern baldness like symptoms
