Can Propecia help against "the island"?

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you guys out there had any luck preventing or restoring that island formation in the front? Over the last few weeks my hairline is crumbling like crazy, and the pattern is becoming quite apparent. I'm thinking if i get the ok from my Doctor this week, i may try propecia and see what happens..

yes, although all clinical trials only collected data on the crown, just about everyone who has had success with propecia / finasteride (as myself) has seen improvement on the hairline, thus your "island". Now nobody ever regrows the full hairline (though i heard there was one case on TBT radio show) with finasteride. Some hairline maturation is natural; however, formation of the "island" is male pattern baldness and finasteride should help out!

oh yeah, i would not say that the "island" pattern is male pattern baldness, not just normal maturation, i don't think anybody just gets an island type pattern and stops, it progresses

Some individuals hold that island for a long time. But that´s true: the natural direction is continue balding.


It´s curious how balding works. There´s an area surrounded by miniaturized hair and right in the middle: hair. I´ve got just the opposite: No loss anywhere, just a spot in the crown surrounded by healthy hairs.


Anyway, balding is weird, no matter what you have.


To the original question: I do think it could help. I´ve seen some pics of finasteride working on top/frontal area. But if the pattern is showing aggresively, just go directly to the Big 3.

My feeling is the hairline is super sensitive to DHT. Even the women in my family have the "widow's peak," they just have long hair so it's not obvious. So even the little DHT present in women is enough to cause maturation of the hairline. You would likely need near 100% DHT inhibition to prevent hairline maturation, and no drug does that.

I suggest getting on minoxidil too. It's a pain in the *** due to the inconveniences, but if you have an island forming, trust me, it's worth it.

As soon as I noticed an island forming on my head I went straight for the Big 3. However, I was only able to get the minoxidil first and I had to wait a month and a half to get my finasteride. So I got on the minoxidil right away and within two months, it already helped to stop the island formation. I was on minoxidil alone for the first month and a half so I'm fairly certain it was just the minoxidil that helped take care of the island. But by all means, get on propecia too.

btw, I also need to mention that it only helped in stopping the island formation, but didn't help in stopping my temples from receding.... that's just my experience though.

minoxidil alone will only temporarily stop the island. If it is going to form, minoxidil will regrow some, but in at most a year, it will continue to form at the same rate. Minoxidil grows a lot of hair, but you need finasteride to keep the results while you are on minoxidil. and you loose them if you get off minoxidil.

unfortunately i've tried minoxidil but had to stop after a few days because of scary sides...i posted about it but its been deleted for some reason.
I just got some Prox-N and NANO that i'm adding to the regimen, and hopefully will be starting Propecia tomorrow. thanks for the replies, hoepfully i can at least maintain...

from what i understand,

finasteride is the drug that stops the island formation in most people and minoxidil will help regrow some hair on it. if you are happy with your current hairline then minoxidil wont really be any benefit to you.

Well i started Propecia yesterday, and haven't noticed any regrowth yet (JUST KIDDING).

Well see how it goes....hopefully less sides for me than minoxidil.
