Started finasteride a month ago, at first I was also worried about the sides but one day after a few drinks I went nuts and took my first pill.

Apart from the occasional testicle aches for the first few days I have had no other sides at all! After a week's treatment I am no longer seeing any hair on my pillow where prior to finasteride I would see at least 15 on my pillow.

May I ask what dose you are on?

What would you guys say are 'acceptable sides'. By that I mean ones I may get short term while my body is adjusting to the lower DHT?

I have read nut ache is a common one that usually goes away in a few days. Any others?

Could live with watery semen, increased/decreased libido depending on how bad it is.

nut ache and watery semen are the sides that dont really effect much else.

Thinking about my hair to the point were I am having dreams where I am bald (horseshoe). Crown and top of my head also starting to itch bad at times (usually at night?). Spending way to much energy/stress thinking about hair / looking in mirror / counting hairs in sink and in my hand. Getting sad when I see tiny miniaturized hairs on pillow.

Going to start finasteride tonight, try to forget about it and my hair, and quit if I get any scary sides. Ill take some before pictures and let you guys know how it goes for me. Hopefully see ya in success stories someday

I thought I'd chuck in my two cents to the initial question of this thread.

I started Propecia/finasteride two years ago and I'm glad I did! It filled in alot of thinning and made me alot happier. However yes I had side effects. Testicle pains, different texture to semen and less sexual desire. The worst was the first couple of months.

So six months ago I got sick of it and cut down to half a Propecia pill everyday. Most of the sides have gone and I'm back to normal! However my front started thinning out again, so half a propecia pill in my opinion is less effective but still works and has practically no sides. Give half a pill daily a try

Myhairbegone I totally understand the dreams I sometimes get those too. Hair loss is not fun especially at my age of 25 but it is what it is. I'm sure you have positive and negative days like me too. If it gets to the point where we shave it one day atleast we will be past it and done with it! :D

Also my Doctor gave me a script for Propecia.. I'm not sure if buying such cheap finasteride is legit? Maybe it's different in the US

I know someone balding like you around the crown rather than take the full tablet of finasteride, he told me he used a pill cutter and takes 1/4 the regular tablet. He says it still gives him relief, his hair is looking better but he doesn't have to fight the nasty side effects others suffer from. Good luck

Thanks. Im taking the quartered 5mg generic finasteride. Just started yesterday. Going to use nizoral (regenpure dr) shampoo 3x a week as well.

If I'm not happy with where I am at in 6 months to a year I will add Rogaine. If I get any sides I think ill quit and take my genetic licks. Took some before photos, ill let everyone know how it goes in a couple months

Thanks yep thats what I am doing. I feel like the odds of sides must be higher than 2% based on everything I have read, but hoping I am one of the lucky ones

Don't you mean you are hoping not to be one of the 'unlucky' ones --- you do realise that the chance of sides is about 2%, not 98%... right.

I am very aware otherwise I wouldn't take the risk on the first place. But from everything I have read I don't believe that 2% number, I think it is higher than that in reality

When you say "everything l've read" , please tell me that excludes all website in which any Tom, Dhick and Harry can sign-up and leave their "personal experience" for free.

It does not. But I also read a lot of studies and take the anecdotal evidence with a grain of salt compared to that

Supposdly the stats on low on getting sexual sides but from what I've heard most people do get sides. It's seriously not that bad. Give it a couple months and they will most likely subside. If you want more assurance go talk to a good doctor and see him every couple of months

Like I said if the sides are too much, cut to 1/8th of the pill (half dosage) and see how you go

Cutting dosage to anything of 0.5mg or above is useful for the purpose of gaining ones trust in the drug, but that's all. It's not a case of half a pill, half the chance of sides.

0.5mg for example surpresses about 66% of DHT compared to about 69% from taking the full 1mg. So halving a 1mg pill will be cutting your chance of sides by a whopping 3%!! DHT suppression is what causes any possible side effects, so unless you plan on taking less than 0.25mg per day i.e. to surpress a "significantly" less amount of DHT, then there's not much point, in real terms. For gaining some false trust however it is actually a good method and one in which I used myself.

I think you need to put into perspective the whole thing regarding side effects. You are planning to surpresses your natural level of DHT. In some way, shape or form this will have some type of effect on your body, one being healthier hair follicles, another being a lower PSA reading. There's plenty of reactions to any action and DHT suppression is no different. In that sense, side effects are inevitable, the underlying factor to consider however is this:

the chance of getting side effects that would be considered "noticeably" undesirable, is roughly 2%.

Agreed on everything you said except the 2%. If you want to believe the 2%, that's fine, but I don't, that's all I'm saying. If you could link me to some studies in the last decade that support this number I would appreciate it.

Hi there mate,

I don't feel it's necessary for me to link to any studies to prove that the side effects are 2% chance, those official studies are available for all to see and have been for a while. It really comes down to you providing me with a link to some official studies to support your theory that the figure is actually higher than 2%. Remember you are the one doubting the "official figures", not me, thus you need to provide alternative official study material to support your reason for doubting the figures.

It's not that relevant in the scale of things though; I was scared to take finasteride just like you, I also took 0.5mg per day to begin with just like you was thinking about doing. Us balding men all go through this phase before taking a long-term drug therapy like finasteride, it's normal and I'd be more worried if you didn't give a rats-behind about starting finasteride. Just don't be so hard on yourself because if you let it grab your mind too much then its almost certain that you will imagine at least some form of side effects.

I love my hair (well what's left of it), I wish I had started finasteride 5 years ago, I'm just trying to help people not have those same regrets. If I get sides from finasteride I will be straight on here reporting them, however I don't think I will be doubting the figures though, because the internet weighs heavily on complaining and trolling, it always has and always will, so it's not a fair view-point (of pretty much anything). Remember; nobody goes online to commend how great their Tesco chicken fillet tasted the other night, however if they had food poisoning from it then you can guarantee they'd be announcing it all over the net in any which way possible.
