"Compared with coffee nondrinkers, men who consumed >200 mL coffee/d had 50% higher IL-6,30% higher CRP, 12% higher SAA, and 28% higher TNF- [alpha] concentrations and 3% higher WBC counts (all: P <0>200 mL coffee/d had 54% higher IL-6, 38% higher CRP, 28% higher SAA, and 28% higher TNF- [alpha] concentrations and 4% higher WBC counts (all: P < 0.05) than did non coffee drinkers. These findings remained significant even following control for the interactions between coffee consumption and age, sex, smoking, body mass index, physical activity status, and other covariates.

It appears that there is a relationship between moderate-to-high coffee consumption and increased inflammation process. "

My god :(

Is a hairloss sufferer allowed to do anything these days...?

I mean, we can't smoke, drink, stay up too late, eat anything sugary, build muscle, and now we can't have a cup of coffee...

What next?

Well, I'm gonna carry on drinking coffee. And having the odd pint of cider. And working out. Otherwise my "regimen" will take over my damn life.

Can't say I blame you at all. I think if you enjoy coffee, you should just keep drinking it.

For me however, where chronic scalp bleeding and inflammation is very serious, I will be giving it up. The raise in TNF-alpha concerns me greatly. Actually, the reason I even looked up this study is because I suspected coffee was always making my itch worse.

Inflammation is a much greater concern for guys who are genetically susceptible to the negative effects of androgens on the scalp, thus creating a harsh immune response.

If a guy has good genetics, he can drink all the coffee he wants. It won't burn his scalp at all, because there is no genetic sensitivity to dht in the first place. The scalp isn't under immune attack here.

Wait wait hold the horses. Forget the coffee are you guys in agreement by saying that the scalp burn or itch is in part caused by DHT or androgens? My head itches all the time and I swear its dht. Im also thinning there is DHT whats doing this? Oh yeah to stay on point i never drink coffee and my hairloss isnt bad and im losing mainly at the crown for some reason.

itch caused by inflammation. inflammation caused by glucose/insulin. insulin and androgens linked.

Yes, the burn and itch is a direct result of the immune response to a sensitity to androgens. I developed an intense itch at around 19 years old, all over the scalp, particularly in the temples. The only things that even come close to reducing the itch somewhat (at least for me) are Propecia, Soy, T-Gel (with menthol), and Nizoral.

And as powersam pointed out, yes, insulin is a major factor I suspect. Certain foods, particularly those high in glycemic index, over a long period of time, make the itch and burn much worse. Junk food is a real don't, if you have this condition. It will only make things worse.

I have tried everything to stop it. Nothing has helped me at all. Ive tried fruit and vegetable diet only for many months, every shampoo imagineable, 2 dermatologists and tons of prescriptions shampoos for seb derm. Its funny the 1 thing i tried that made the itch completely go away was saw palmetto but everytime since it hasnt helped so i think it was a placebo effect i guess. I really think DHT is the culprit but im scared to take propecia without knowing.

Propecia reduces mine. But I get sexual sides too. Of course, I am only 2 weeks in, so its too early still to tell.

And yes, saw palmetto helped me as well, but propecia is better for the itch.

My diet consists mainly of whole grains, fruit, lean poultry, fish, and soy products. I use nizoral and t-gel religiously.

You are right, diet alone does very little. But I believe bad diet can aggravate the condition. Anti-androgens are absolutely essential however.

I absolutely love coffee but I'm so desperate to rid the damn itch that I'm willing to try and quit the coffee for a week.
