20 Month update:-July 2005

Well, it's been a little over a year and a half on proscar. After about 6 months of agnoizing over my hair, i re-resigned myself to work and school and tried the best i could to forget about it all. Now, 20 months after i started proscar (and going on 30 years old), it's time to come back and post an update. I've updated my pics (link below).

Current Regimen:
I've been on proscar (cut to 4ths, 5ths, and sometimes messy and powdery 7ths and 8ths) for 20 months. I'm not diligent in taking the meds. I miss days here and there. I rotate between 4-5 regular, medicinal, and cosmetic shampoos - nizoral 2%, loreal thickening shampoo for men, and a few generic grocery store types. I still drink tonnes of coffee, sleep sporadically, don't eat too well (as in, don't eat at all sometimes) and i have yet to give up my 1/2 a pack a day habit.

Progress:
I keep my hair between 2 and 4 inches so I can comb over the thinning spots a bit. I haven't lost any more hair but I don't see hair in the sink anymore - and i mean none! It's still thin up top and on the crown but my temples haven't receeded any futher since i noticed the first stages off hairloss in '99.

My hair appears thicker too. Rotating between the shampooos really helps to give my hair a shinier, fuller look. Proscar has helped to stop my hair loss and is slowly working it's magic to thicken up my existing hair.

Side-Effects
The wood is still not what it used to be. I can knock a hard one out every now and then but i've gotta be really turned on. but that doesn't happen too often. is because of a reduced libido due to proscar? is it because my girl friend has put on a bunch of pounds? is it because im getting older? is it because i'm pre-occupied with work? dunno. it's something i've accepted for the time-being. if and when it becomes important to me again, i'll take another look at it. I was also getting zits throughout the first 6 months but not anymore. And no soft tits.

My Plan:
I'm staying on Proscar folks. It's pretty hassle free and i don't sweat it when i miss a day here or there. The older i get, the more i can accept having my hair the way it is. If i start losing any more though... i'll be pissing bullets!

i'm still rootin' for all the guys on this board. if you're not happy about something, change it. i respect all of you guys for coming here to b**ch a little, fret a little, and eventually find ways to make your life a little better inspite of your hair. fight the good fight brothers!

2 Month Update: -February 2004-
I'm still religeously taking 1.25 mg/day. My shedding has slowed down a bit. It's tough to say by how much but what's notable is that I'm no longer shedding aesthetically "healthy" hairs. It's now limited to short, thin, and measily buggers. I'm trying to keep my chin up and hope that I either accept the way it's going or see some improvement soon.

First "My-Story" post below -December 2003-

Me:
28 years old; diffuse thinner on front, top, and crown; loss started 4 years ago; merek proscar user since Nov.2003; no other medications.

Family History:
My paternal grandfather passed away this year at the age of 83 and he was sporting a full head of hair all the way to the cremation bire. My father is 63 and *just* starting to show some thinning hair. My brother is 35 and has been working his way to the horseshoe pattern for the past 10 years. The blokes on my mums side are all horseshoe or nw6.

My Story:
I started thinning at the front hairline 4 years ago but my temples and crown were perfectly intact. It wasn't a problem at the time because I was doing the "shag" haircut thing and it worked for me.

2 years ago I returned home from studying elsewhere....what f*****g stress! I was 26, living in my parents basement, single and sexless for a long time, and working towards a second degree with 2 years left to go. This is when the top started to thin and has continued to thin since.

The situation has rapidly worsened during the last 6 months. My temples are starting to go. My forehead is getting huge, my crown is thinning, and my scalp is starting to show all over. The loss became too unbearable and I decided to get on the junk 6 weeks ago. I've been shedding for 3 months (started prior to treatment) and I don't notice any let-up.

My Plan:
I'm going to stick with proscar for 1 year and then reevaluate. I'm averse to adding any topicals to the mix right now; I wan't to fully ride out the proscar first. I wish I would have started treatment 4 years ago. Young fellas! Get your melon checked out at the first signs of balding.

Re: Your regime

Thought I'd say a quick hello as my hair loss is very similar to yours.

I'm a male (33) first noticed hair loss May 2001 - been through a strange journey since. On the whole have stayed on top of it. Began with Propecia (expensive) and stayed with it for over two years now. I'm not honestly sure if it's helped in any way but the result is that I've gradually thinned out more and more over the years.

Went to a dermatologist who I think seems to be very good and knows what he's talking about. He wants me on Proscar and Minoxidol together and most importantly he's got me TAKING PICTURES at the hospital at regular intervals. This is crucial for me because SO much time is wasted wondering what the hell is going on results wise. Now, I'm just gonna stick with the regime and get results that I can consult with my dermatologist on.

Now if nothing happens at least I can say I gave it my best shot.
It's very hard to know what the chances are, isn't it?

Now one final thing of interest to me is that you appear to be losing hair in a pattern that is very common on this website - ie diffuse thinning all over! It's odd we always discuss receding but there seem to be a lot of diffuse thinners these days - has it gotten more common? If so why?

Perhaps there is a lifestyle element at work here. At any rate, all the best to you - I hope the finasteride works. 8)

Heya Catcher! Thanks for the good words.

It's unfortunate for guys like us that while this board is full with modest norwood-type recovery/maintenance stories, there's hardly any positive feedback for diffuse thinners. Very disheartening. Most of what I've read with regards to our pattern is pretty much exactly what you wrote. Looks like we're doomed to continue to thin, albeit more gracefully with treatments I suppose.

You've noticed a lot of diffuse thinners on this board? I can't say I have - and I'm paying attention!

How quickly have you thinned? What's your family history like?

I was starting to believe difusers had a better chance of maintenance/improvement. Oh well there goes that idea. Im the same as you, wish i had started treatment earlier. And i dont think your hair looks bad at all, cut it shorter it might help.

20 month update at the top of this thread.

goldenbear, maybe us diffusers do, really, i don't know. i've sometimes read that we do, and somethimes read that we don't. and i hear ya, i bet we all wish we would have started treatment earlier. i'll say this though, 20 months after the fact, i'm glad i didn't start any later than i did. good luck to you man.
