Nizoral, with Ketoconazole as its active ingredient is anti-dandruff shampoo actually, so what benefits people suffering from male pattern baldness might have from it?

I think there was a study showing that nizoral helps promote hair growth but im not really sure. The main reason a lot of people use it is to keep their scalp healthy.

Sure, if you have dandruff but otherwise I doubt. There are other Ketoconazole based shampoos but only in case of Nizoral I heard it might be beneficial to people suffering from male pattern baldness.

Use the search function. There are probably hundreds of posts on the benefits of Nizoral on male pattern baldness.

Of course its the keta which is what makes nizoral beneficial for male pattern baldness. If can find a cheaper keta shampoo, use it.

Ketaconazole (sp?) is a mild antiandrogen apparently.

There are studies showing it increased hair diametre by around 7%.

There is a study which showed it had a similar effect to a once a day application of 2% minoxidil.

The last one sounds quite impressive, and people expect great things from nizoral upon hearing it, but many people dont respond to 5% minoxidil twice a day, so minoxidil 2% once a day is going to be pretty modest.

It's also suppose to help cut down on the itchiness that minoxidil may bring. Well at least that 's the reason that I use it.

There's no scientific backing to that. I'd rather choose not to believe "hundreds of posts".

@Felk: I doubt Ketoconazole is anti-androgen at all. Even if it is, it's too harsh for daily use so wouldn't have effect at all.

It does have anti-androgenic properties, as well as anti-inflammatory properties.

It's believed to be the former which causes hair growth.

Ketoconazole has been proven to regrow hair almost equivalent to 2% minoxidil when used several times weekly.

There have been several studies conducted on ketoconazole, meaning that it DOES INDEED have scientific backing.

Many doctors prescribe the 2% ketoconazole with Propecia.

There are two reasons why an male pattern baldness sufferer should use Nizoral.

First, Keto IS a mild anti-androgen, and it IS scientifically backed.

Second, the malaseezia yeast that occurs naturally on all human scalps creates an ambient irritation in the scalp (even for non-dandruff sufferers) and this irritation is similar in nature to and can actually attack the scalp in a synergistic way with the irritation caused by DHT in the follicle.

You don't have to take Keto or Nizoral for the second point, any anti-dandruff shampoo would do, and in fact it is good to rotate them as malaseezia can become resistant to a particular anti-fungal if you use it alone for long periods of time.

I bought 2% Ketoconazole shampoo yesterday. It is sold under name Mycoseb and is very cheap in Serbia, about 20 cents with prescription and about 3 euros without. There's nothing that could indicate Ketoconazole is mild anti-androgen in the instructions. I'll start using it twice a week anyway, and wait to see results.
