As you must be knowing there are ideal 2 methods of Hair transplant:-
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)= strip method where the strip is cut from the donor area and then grafts are extracted from the strip and transplanted to the recipient area and the donor area is sutured.
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)= Single follicle are extracted from the donor area and are transplanted to the recipient area.
Advance part of Follicular unit extraction is Direct hair implantation (DHI) – In which hair follicles are implanted to recipient area from donor area.
The result will depend upon what type of hair transplant procedure u have done or your planning too.
The result may again vary at what place you have done your hair transplant, sometime result may vary from patient to patient, and how post care is done(care, medication & supportive treatment).
So let me explain you the process of Follicular unit extraction hair transplant:
1) You Need to consult an experienced hair transplant surgeon and get an idea about Hair transplant and also know about the process of surgery, a number of grafts you require and get an idea about how your donor and recipient area are.
2) We need to do the blood test and require physical fitness certificate before undergoing the Hair transplant surgery.
3) On the day of surgery, the grafts are extracted and transplanted as per the latest technology available, the process is done under local anesthesia. The time of surgery will depend on a number of grafts required.
4) Once the surgery is done it takes around 3-5 days for the grafts to get fixed into the recipient area. The donor area gets heal with 3-5 days, a patient is advised to take oral medication like antibiotics for the healing of donor as well as the recipient area.
5) On fifth-day post-surgery, the head wash is done with mild shampoo/foam in a clinic as per patient availability and the process of head wash is explained to the patient. Then the patient is advised for the regular head wash.
6) Oral multivitamin + FDA approved medications are started from 10 days of surgery.
7) We can see a growth of transplanted hair on 15-days post surgery, at this stage we can get an idea about our results/density, this stage helps us to know about the grafts survival rate.
(* numbness of scalp is noted at this stage, itching on the scalp is also present on and off - some patient may get folliculitis)
8) Topical Minoxidil application and multivitamins are advised to patient from 1-month post surgery also we advice 1 platelet-rich plasma session at this stage.
9) After 20 days to almost 2 -3 months the shedding phase starts, in this phase, the transplanted grafts start shedding outpatients are very disturbed and worried when they see there are shedding off - but not to worry the roots are fixed and only shafts are getting shed, which is temporary and definitely reversible.
( numbness on the scalp is reduced almost 95% mild itching may remain)
9) Then from the 3rd month, the transplanted roots start to grow - we can feel the grafts by hand and even we can see it under Trichscope. We advise Platelet-rich plasma session at this stage as well(opinions may vary).
10) From 4th month onwards we can get to see 10 % growth every month.
11) 5th month almost 20% growth is noted of transplanted hair.
12) From 6th month - very nice growth is seen almost 30-40 % hair growth is achieved for transplanted hair .( results may vary 10-20% in each individual)
So at 6 months post Hair transplant, we get a clear idea about the result.
It takes almost 9-12 months to see complete hair growth of transplanted hair.
The results depend on the post-surgery care taken, the multivitamin support + FDA approved medications and the sincere use of a medical line of treatment post hair transplant.
So it is advised to take proper care and proper maintenance of transplanted hair as per the advice of the Hair transplant surgeon and Dermatologist.
