Could using a hair iron for straightening cause hair loss?

I have been using a straightening iron for over a year, i recently discovered my hair loss.. and i want to keep using my straighter to style my hair (otherwise it looks like a wild dry bush). What do you guys think about this? Logically thinking, if im not going near my roots with the straighter, would it really have any effect on growth i.e straightening hair that's already been grown for a while?

No but make sure you use heat protection..
