I'm only 21 and have been on finasteride for 8 months and minoxidil 5% twice daily for around 6. I have 3 questions:
1. How long can I expect my finasteride to continue to maintain what I have.*
-Ive heard 2 years. Is this in reference to how long you can expect the finasteride to have a shot at regrowing, or is this really the case. In which case im kinda fucked.
2. How long can i expect the minoxidil to be effective at growing new hair.
-Ive heard 2 years for this also, but please clarify.
3. Once the minoxidil has lost its effectiveness at growing new hair how long can it be effective at maintaining what it has grown.

Nice, I'm 20. Was on Propecia for 10 months... now on dutasteride and minoxidil.

1) Finasteride 1mg has been studied to improve and maintain hair in 9/10 people. The haircounts are still significantly over baseline even after 5 years. You can expect to stay above baseline (after your shedding phases and whatnot) after 5+ years. The 10 year results haven't been published yet, but they will be soon. It's suggested that finasteride will probably yield long-term results past 5 years.

2) Minoxidil has been studied for 48 months of hair regrowth. After that, there are no conclusive studies, at least not to my knowledge. After speaking with several doctors, one of whom was Dr. Lee, the general concensus is that you will regrow hair for 2-3 years, and after that you will maintain. There is no such thing as minoxidil tolerance.

3) You will have to use this treatment for the rest of your life to maintain the results that you got those first 2-3 years.

I hope this helps.

why did you change from finasteride to dutasteride?
will one or the other do a better job with the front as in the hairline and front half area?

It only has FDA Phase II studies for male pattern baldness. It doesn't have FDA Phase III trials for male pattern baldness completed yet.

Phase II studies show that, within 2 years, it does a better job... I believe a hair loss expert, Bryan, said about ~21% more effective than 1mg finasteride.

But we don't know about the long-term efficacy of the product.

That's why claims cannot be made about dutasteride in the long run, which is what we all care about-- long term maintenance.
