Ok guys. I know it has been a while, but I decided to give a little update. My fincar just arrived in the mail, but I am still not sure if I want to start it yet. Im only using Rogaine Foam on my hairline/temples and have not noticed any new growth. I realize that it takes a couple of months, but I am impatient.

No side affects with the foam, but it does seem that my hairline is thinning as well as receding. It use to just be receding until I started the foam and now it looks like its thinning and getting worse. The thinning could just be because of the initial shedding, but I still dont like it. My hair seemed a lot more thick when I was just using nizoral. So many issues...geeez..

Don't underestimate how much your mind can play tricks on you.

I was on minoxidil foam for about 2 months this time last year and swore up and down that it had eaten my hairline and thinned me out significantly. I thought that because I was checking my hairline 10 times a day (no exaggeration). I eventually chilled out and stopped thinking about it and realized it hadn't really changed at all.

The best thing to do is take pictures with the same lighting, angles, etc. They don't lie but your eyes definitely do :)

The finasteride makes me nervous. Even if I get no sides immediately, Im worried about taking it for the rest of my life and what could develop later on down the road. What do you guys think?

IMO if you dont get continuous sides within the first 6 months
you more than likely will not get them within years to come

remember minoxidil doesn't solve the underlining issue of hair loss
finasteride does

just something to think about

cheers mate

I found this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=61&t=53109&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

And it contained some posts with pro-finasteride comments. It helped me see both sides. I am not on Fincar yet because of the fear of forever sides. My original plan was to use nizoral and finasteride and see how that goes. My loss is not bad and I dont think I need minoxidil. But to confuse things, I am on minoxidil right now just to take the place of not taking finasteride.

So my plan is to start finasteride and get off of minoxidil and see how that goes.
Any advice?

Alright, I buckled down, bought an air tight pill holder and cut up a 5mg finasteride. pill. So its off to the races! I use a razor blade to cut the pill, so its easy to split into 1/4's. Ill keep you guys updated on any sides. I heard they come around month 1.

Uh oh. Started to notice an erection issue and I have only been on Fincar for 5 days. No worries though. It will go away and Ill be back to normal. No testical pain or intense shedding. Also, I stopped minoxidil and will see how finasteride affects my hairline.

Decided to stop taking Fincar after 5 days of use. Once my erections went totally away and when I tried to focus it was only 65% strength. So I decided that it was not worth it. I know that others will say that the sides will go away, but right now in my life I need my libido and it was not worth the risk to me.

So now its only minoxidil and nizoral.

That's understandable, I too am apprehensive of using finasteride. I think my libido has always been really high but my boners are a bit come and go anyway - so I obviously don't want to make it worse. What about the theory that 0.4mg of finasteride is as effective as 1mg - I've heard some people take that (obviously dividing up the 1mg propecia pill) and it can mean less sides. There's quite a bit of info on the forum about it. finasteride is the only thing that will stop your hair from further leaving your pate. minoxidil is a stimulant for regrowth and it's only 1 side of the coin.

I may go on finasteride in a few days (when it arrives, Finscar) but obviously the sides issue does seem pertinent.

That's fair enough, I'd be doing the same thing if finasteride gave me a side effect like that, just make sure you stick with minoxidil/nizoral.

Thanks guys for the advice. Its really hard to cut up a fincar pill to 0.4mg. Its hard enough trying to cut it into 1/4's with a razor blade. With my high libido and hard on's all the time, going straight to almost no feeling down there with the fincar did scare me. Its a weird thing, I did not think that a lower libido would bother me as much if I had good hair. But I did feel less like a man and even my girl said that should would rather me be a bald horn dog than a soft vegetable with luscious locks.

Right now my hair is not too bad, so Ill see what minoxidil and nizoral does for me. No sides with minoxidil.

alot of people experience weird erections and lower libido within the first month

things usually stabilize in the second month

for me i had lower libido at week 2 and it went away by week three

cheers

Deathcab's Story (Updated27/Receding Hairline/1%nizoral/5%minoxidil)

Ok, here is an update. I have been using rogaine foam just on my hairline and temples. It has only been 2 months but I think I see improvement. The temples look less deep, but that could be because my hairline is still receding. Sorry about the bad picture but I was in a hurry and could not take more.

Please let me know what you guys think. My hair is longer, but I pulled it out of the way as best as I could. One question. Does minoxidil affect libido and erections like finasteride. does? Maybe a little?

Looking good. Some people have had success on minoxidil and finasteride alone. minoxidil doesn't cause libido and erection problems like finasteride does.

If you want to augment things without going for propecia, you could try to chuck in another topical (e.g. spironolactone), or perhaps do one of the more experimental internals (such as the immortal hair curcumin, resveratrol etc combo). For now, I'd see how you hold up with the current treatment - it might be enough for you on its own.
