Hi guys--
Long time lurker here, but this is the first post for me. I'm 24 years old and have been experiencing diffuse thinning on the top of my head for about the last 10 months. It began after a period of extreme stress when I started to notice my hair falling out in the shower when my hands would be covered in it. My scalp was incredibly itchy and was often red and flaky for a few months. Since then, the hair loss has slowed down dramatically, and I'm only losing about 5-10 a day in the shower, and occasionally a few more if I run my hands through my hair. This all happened very suddenly, and I was shedding an extreme number of hairs within about a week after it started.
I went to see a dermatologist who said it was stress related (I'm guessing he meant Telogen Effluvium). I'm hoping that I'm not having male pattern baldness, because the hair that falls out is thick, healthy hair, and not the thinner hair that you experience with male pattern baldness. My hair line has not receded at all, but the entire top of my head has thinned out. It has been about 8-9 months since the serious shedding has stopped and there are still no signs of regrowth yet. Should I start freaking out about this yet or give it more time to grow back? What could be some other causes of diffuse thinning other than Telogen Effluvium, as this doesn't seem to really fit into the regular male pattern baldness realm? Has anyone else been through Telogen Effluvium and had their hair take this long to regrow? Any comments or suggestions at all would be most appreciated.
Right now I'm using Nizoral and also taking vitamin and MSM supplements (I've avoided minoxidil and finasteride until I'm sure of what's going on with my hair).
Thanks!
