Diffuse thinning/long hair and minoxidil

I always had thick, thick dark long hair. I noticed it was coming out in brushloads at the end of 2006. By Feb 2007 I'd noticed thinning, and was concerned enough to see my family doctor as well as a couple of dermatologists. They were all completely useless, telling me it was Telogen Effluvium and refusing to prescribe anything. By Nov 2007 I'd had enough, and just ordered some Finax online.

I've been on finasteride since then, and I was under the impression that it was maintaining my hair pretty well. Lately, I've noticed things are getting a lot worse up there. I am not really sure if finasteride even helped at all, considering how quickly my hair has thinned. I keep my hair long (haven't even had a haircut since the one I got in May 2007 to confirm my suspicions), and I'm still able to pull this off reasonably well. It's becoming rather obvious to me that the part is thinning/widening a lot, and I'm rapidly approaching the point where it will look ridiculous.

I'm pretty attached to my long hair, since I know I'll never be able to grow it again once I shave it off, so I'd like to keep it around as long as I can. I never considered minoxidil at the beginning because I wanted to see how things went on finasteride first. I think now would be a good time to add the minoxidil.

I've read varying accounts of how useful it is for diffuse thinners. I'm a little concerned about shedding, since it could have enough of a cosmetic impact on my hair to make my current hairstyle unworkable. I'm also really wondering how you would apply it to your scalp if you are losing hair over such a large area. Do you apply small amounts bit by bit, use more than the regular dose, or what? I have the added complication of long hair, which I suppose I could part in a few places to help apply the minoxidil. There are certainly lots of women with diffuse hair loss doing this. Also, would the foam be easier to apply?

I guess a lot of guys using minoxidil go for a short style so the results are more apparent. Are there any other guys out there who kept their hair long?

My hair looked like his two years ago. Wish I hadn't put all my eggs in one basket with the finasteride, though who knows if it would have made any difference :(

I'm still quite interested in opinions on this subject. Would I be better off with the foam or Kirkland minoxidil?

Guys with long hair say they have a better "experience" with liquid.

Experience is a very, very vague term.

I'm really mainly interested in the ease of application and any possible cosmetic implications (e.g. greasy scalp would probably make things look worse). With long hair and diffuse thinning, would you part your hair a few times and apply portions of the regular dose, or what? I understand it's not effective if it a lot of it just goes in your hair.

It has to reach the scalp, harder with longer hair to make sure it gets in their. Also shedding may be more noticeable with longer hair. But I mean so many varying stories, imo just gotta apply it properly, consistently, and give it time and see how it works for you.

I just received my order from min*xidildirect (great source for this stuff). Haven't properly applied it yet, but I did try it out earlier this evening to see how it's applied. I squirted a bit into the cap, and was surprised by how quickly it dissipated into liquid. I guess the key is to squirt it on cold fingers and massage it in immediately. I dripped the liquid on my hair parting, and it ran everywhere, on my face and in my mouth :sobbing: I was quite surprised by how fast it dried. I can't tell I even applied it, and I can definitely understand the negative remarks about regular minoxidil, if it's greasy and doesn't dry like this.

I need to get a straight comb to help part my hair more easily, since I have to apply it over a large area. Should I be using more than the half capful, considering how much I have to cover? I'll definitely be showering a couple times a day so I can do this with damp hair.

I read that the foam has quite a strong smell, and sure enough, it really does. Very perfumey, with lots of alcohol before it dries. I can still smell it on my hands an hour later. Does normal generic minoxidil have a smell? I can't imagine why anyone would add such a strong and distinctive scent to a product like this, unless it was to cover up a "medicated" smell or somthing like that. I hope that shampooing beforehand will help cover it up. I'll definitely be able to tell who else uses Rogaine foam from now on :shakehead:

I have a good feeling about this. I am pretty sure I lost a fair bit of hair on Concerta for the last couple of months, so hopefully the minoxidil can spur some new growth and thicken up what I've got left. I'm not too happy about the prospect of applying it twice a day for the rest of my life, but if it works, $180/year is quite reasonable to me.

I'll post an update in six months, or something like that. I'm making a big effort to stay off hair loss forums, because it just makes me obsess over this stuff a lot more, and I don't need it on my mind right now. No offense to anyone here, you are all great :)

P.S. Rogaine Foam doesn't taste good.

I have longish hair (mid back) and have been using minoxidil since 2005. I use Dr Lees no PPG formula since i am allergic to PPG and use the liquid and apply using the dropper by making small parts in the hair mainly at the front where it is thinning the most and also down the large part in the centre of my hair.

Has definately helped thicken things up altho hard to tell what is doing what since i have a pretty full on regieme.

from your post it sounds like you are using way too much if it is rolling down your face. you only need around 1ml twice a day.
