diffusers: be wary of growing your hair out

This has been said before but I think it is worth repeating.

I think a lot of guys that are diffusely thinning tend to dread the next haircut, fearing their male pattern baldness has progressed and they will look even more bald with shorter hair. As a result, they may tend to let their hair grow a bit longer than usual, in the hopes that doing so will conceal their hair loss.

This is usually a big mistake, as I found out myself a few months ago. First, long hair (like 4-5+ inches) is a pain in the *** to maintain and gets blown around in the wind very easily. It often looks unkempt.

Second, contrary to what you might assume, longer hair accentuates thinning. I was amazed at how much hair I still had when I cut my hair from 4-5 inches to 2-3 inches. This seems to be a common experience for most thinning guys.

Third, I see a lot of thinning guys combing their longish hair to the side in a weird, combover-esque sort of thing, or letting their hair sit on top of their head in a flat, see-through bed of disheveled curls. These looks are horrible on anyone, and are purely the product of fear and anxiety. I think that this may be the first step toward becoming an older guy with a terrible combover - you start out and it doesn't look THAT bad, but then as the years progress your self-image becomes warped and you fail to realize how ridiculous you look.

So, that's it in a nutshell. If you find yourself frustrated every morning with trying to style your diffuse hair, or running to the mirror whenever you come in from a windy day, it may be time to try a shorter hair style. YMMV, as always.

Everything you just said also applies to guys who are NW4+ and get hair transplants. Have you ever seen a guy with hair transplant's that has hair longer than 1"?

Thats about 90% of hair transplant guys, whats the point in getting a hair transplant if you're not going to grow it out? Growing it out is the only way to disguise the thinner density. I dont mean growing it long but 1.5 - 3" is probably the ideal.

Yeah, I think you can disguise the thinning hair well with not too long, not too short haircut. I've seen guys who look like full head of hair when they have medium length hair, but when they buzzed it, I was surprised by their visible thin hair. Like s.a.f said, 1,5 to 3 inches can give illusion of fuller head of hair. Longer hanging thin hair can will look bad.

My self-image hasn't become warped at all during these years, I know I look ridiculous with thin as fook hair, but what can you do?

ghg, can you post some of your overhead pictures? because on your avatar photo your hair doesn't look bad at all. you just seem like you have slightly higher forehead. You don't have any recession, and on this photo your hair doesn't look thin at all. Maybe you are overreacting?

I have posted pics before.

This was over 3 years ago:

This was almost 4 years ago:

Both in dim lighting without flash, without overhead light. Damn obvious thinning in the female pattern (hairline ok, top all messed up). So go figure what it looks like now!

At least you hairline is ok which gives a frame to your face :p I'm a diffuser too and I got receding temples, so it looks even worse.

Piss off. It could work if my hair was still like that, but that was 3-4 years ago. So grow yours out and put some toppik on your head.

Is your hair pretty much like it looked four years ago or is your current state worse?
