I have heard people on this board imply that diffusers might not respond to treatments in the same (positive) way as normal sufferers of male pattern baldness. Anyone have any success with their treatments? If so, how long have you shown positive signs and at what stage of progression are you (unnoticeable, visible scalp in sunlight, bald as hell, etc.)??

Been on Propecia for 3.5 years. First 2 years were great. Within the last year and a half I've been slipping. Thinning all over. I started smoking a year ago and I really think that might have something to do with it. There is NO pattern to my hairloss. Almost looks like woman's hairloss. Anyway, I've been able to stablize recently and my hopes are up. If it gets worse then I think I'll get on Xandrox 5%.

20something- what do u mean that the first two years were great? did u have noticeable loss when u started?

i think the main problem with treating diffuse thinning is that, assuming you start soon after you notice shedding, there is no way to tell if your treatment is working. with normal male pattern baldness, you see those temples going first. with diffuse, your hair looks fine for potentially years before the hairloss becomes noticeable.

i caught my hairloss real really early, so much so it took my derm like a while when looking at my hair to see what i was talkin bout, it was long and poofy, this was a year a go, now i have about half of what i used to, i guess im not a responder, i did have a shed about 6-8 months into it, but doesnt seemt o have recovered at all, added minoxidil which thinned my hair even more but goin to stick with it and hopefully by september it will look better
sumtimes i think propecia has made sh*t worse but i know thats just dumb
i hope hm comes out soon i really really do

I don't think that's true at all.

People thought I was crazy when I said I was losing my hair, so I guess it wasnt very noticeable. I didnt know anything about hairloss and was far away from home and my Doctor. So without seeing my scalp, my Doctor prescribed me Propecia. I started it and shaved my head. When my hair grew back in it was thicker than it had ever been before. It stayed that way for about 2 years and then within the last 1.5 years it has slipped back to where I began.

it is hard to tell whether these treatments have slowed down my thinning, because when i started them i had a thick full head of hair (i knew i was starting to lose it cause i shed like a dog).

four and a half years later, i still shed while on these treatments, but my hair is no longer as thick as it was. have the treatments helped? who knows. it is quite possible that i am on the same dismal path towards baldness at the same rate.

i guess the better question is: are there any diffuse thinners who have experienced maintenance or regrowth while continuing to shed a lot of hairs on a daily basis????

i propose a new forum or subforum for diffuse balding

it is a different mechanism in action and other people's experiences are irrelevant to our case

if we focused on just us, we'd learn more what works/doesnt/etc.

Im diffuse also... but receeding temples exist too. I have a feeling that a lot of us diffusers seem to report minoxidil making matters worse. Id agree with this as i went downhill in 6 weeks, to a point where i was f*****g worried how bad it was... all in 6 weeks. Stopped taking minoxidil and im getting better again after about another 6 weeks off it.

Proscar howerver thickened me up... i hazard a guess and also say year two and three were the best, but i stopped at the start of the year (lazyness) and have slipped back. I feel if i had have stayed on it religiously i see no reason why my hair would be worse even after 3-4 years. Either way, im back on it and will be for at least another 3 years id say. minoxidil can take it up the arse however...
