My first ever batch of generic finasteride tablets arrived this morning.

I'm staring at them, can't quite pluck up the courage to take one, hearing all kinds of side effect stories and the thought of growing man boobs.

What is the real liklihood of any of these??

Man, why did I have to start losing my hair????

the side effects stats provided by the manufacturer are way off...not just 2% at all. BUT this is still pretty much your only hope of maintaining or perhaps regrowing. go for it. i hated the idea of taking finasteride...but its the easiest..like a vitamin, just pop it and you're done.

you can try avoiding sides with a low dosage and then increasing very very gradually.

i took finasteride..and i got sides...reduced libido...absolutely no desire for sex...slight mood swing problem (and i know it was the finasteride because i have patience a mile long and my behaviour after it was inexplicable)...

its been about a month and a half and my libido is slowly but surely coming back...the sides are not permanent..though according to what i've read a very very very very low percentage of people on finasteride actually are suffering from permmanent sides..but its nothing incurable..and maybe after some time they'll go away.

i'd advice..you start with a 1 mg finasteride every other day.

i got a shed as well but i'm supposed to take it as a 'good sign'..

heres the scenario..
you might
A) get no sides whatsoever.....(high probability)
B) get sides which taper off with treatment in about 2 months maybe?
C) get sides which stay even after quitting (highly unlikely..mabe a 0.00001 % chance)

There are quite a few people who post on here that haven't had any sides at all, but like Sir_LagaLot says, the 2% Merck claim get sides does seem way off. I have recently started finasteride myself and decided to be cautious and start on 0.5mg. On the first day I started to get minor sides and on the second day my libido was nil and I had an ache in my balls. After that I stopped taking it and returned to normal after a couple of days. I know that Merck say sides will go after taking it for a while, but I felt like sh*t and didn't want to persevere. I have now started again but this time I am only taking 0.25mg. I have now been taking 0.25mg for around a week and so far everything seems to be fine. The trouble is I doubt if this much will do any good for my hair. I have read that people have had success with lower doses but I'm not sure about 0.25mg? At the end of the day we are all different and have different hormone levels so perhaps some people can have success on lower doses while others might need above the recommended dose to see any effect.

Also, as a musician, vanity is a big part. I'm 35, but look a alot younger, bar the hairloss. I really know I should have started treatments earlier as I'm at about a Norwood 3-4. But need to do something. It's a major pain in the bum.

I will probably try and pop one of the finasteride pills in a couple of days when I'm not doing much. How quickly do side effects normally kick in?

I experienced side effects when I first started finasteride. They soon subsided after a month or so at the most. My only regret now, is that I did not start finasteride sooner then I did. I say go for it, and after 8 months-1 year later I think you will be happy.

Ive been on it for 4 years... wouldn't think twice about it myself. No sides at all for me...

Oh... Except a DD cup breast... but thats normal... right?

Seriously mate... alot of these side effects are DEFINATELY in the head... take 1mg every day and forget about it... re-analyse your hair in 6 months... but not before, i think you'll be pleasantly suprised.
