I asked a doctor about finasteride a month ago.

He said that finasteride is the prostate cancer version, whereas propecia is the version for hair loss (incorrect). He then told me they would need to order blood tests to know if my hair loss is due to androgens or malnutrition -- also incorrect given the recognizable pattern. He then said sometimes doctors prefer patients take minoxidil. Finally he said hair loss is genetic, and in studies propecia helps one third of people, has no effect on another third, and makes things worse for the last third, so it's not an effective drug (incorrect).

I did not bother arguing with him.

What kind of doctor did you go to? If a GP/primary care you might have more trouble, I mean some of them know absolutely nothing about MPHL. A good dermatologist should be knowledgeable and willing to prescribe.

Otherwise there are hair transplant surgeons but be weary which on you go- some of them only care about selling surgeries. Read reviews and only go to IAHRS certified.

I had a similar problem. When I asked my doctor if he could prescribe me finasteride he just gave me a funny look and said "we don't do that". I'm not even sure he knew what finasteride was. You could try talking to another doctor or ordering it off the internet (not recommended).
In the UK there are Chemists like Boots and Lloyds who can sell you finasteride after you've done a short consultation. I'm speaking to Boots next week.

Yeah the doctors playing gatekeeper is another reason why a lot of men dont actually treat male pattern baldness. Who wants to sign up for life long doctor visits for refills for a cosmetic thing? Not a lot of men unless its a major health issue. Although some doctors might be more okay with than others or even allow phone refills. Its all a crap shoot because all doctors are different.
