Doctor: "You're going bald, there's nothing you can do about it"

How many doctors and dermatologists have handed out this terrible advice? And how many patients have believed them, and as a result, done nothing to prevent male pattern baldness? How many doctors are even aware of the function of finasteride or it's prescription for male pattern baldness? This is medical negligence! If a doctor incorrectly told somebody suffering any other disease, hereditory or otherwise, that there was nothing they could do about it, and to just accept it, they would be sued for medical negligence! So why do so many doctors get away with it? Doctors need to be held accountable for the bad medical advice they hand out! Better to give no advice at all than the wrong advice. At least with no advice, the patient may actually go off and do some research and find the correct answers, rather than putting their faith in the incorrect advice given by so called medical professionals...

True, but then you gotta switch primary docs, pay for another appointment, take time off work, and so on to see a different Doctor who might say the same thing as the first one. Just like switching ISPs or something its annoying and not very fun to do but you have to see a Doctor or more then one if they give you stupid advice or just dont see things how you do
I think its just a lot of problems doctors deal with are more serious then a cosmetic problem like male pattern baldness so lots of doctors just dont keep up on it or take it that seriously. Also propecia is arguably kind of risky to take long term if your in good health for again a cosmetic problem so some probably would like to avoid that route. They probably prefer you take rogain or something safer.

I went to a specialist and am very happy with his diagnosis and care. I'm just talking about all the other people who went to a doctor and literally told that there's nothing they can do about it. Doctors should not be allowed to offer false advice, they have a duty of care, and I'm pretty sure that they are in breach of that duty by telling patients that they can't do anything about it, and by not informing patients of the FDA approved drugs that are clinically proven to prevent hairloss. I'm almost certain that you can take a doctor to court for negligence if they give you incorrect advice that leads to a patient failing to act on their condition, even if it is a cosmetic one. People who have been given such advice imo should take a case against their doctor. Especially if as a result, they delayed action and treatment of their condition and allowed it to progress unnecessarily.

Yeah I will agree with you that doctors should give you your options at the very least and that includes propecia. On the other hand like I said, I dont think doctors follow hair loss that closely in comparison to the more serious and common variety of problems they deal with. I still think most docs would probably advise against propecia unless hair loss is really bothering you. Do no harm is a good motto to live by, and it is a risk to take any drug to your long term health. Why cant hair loss be treated topically yet? No one knows but I bet its a lot safer.
