Does buzzed hair really = less visible hairloss?

I just buzzed my hair with my trimmer. I cut the top with a number 3 and the back and sides set to a number 2. People on these forums seems to say that a buzz cut makes hairloss less visible but personally i look way more bald now. It seems like the sides and back seem way longer than the top=horse shoe pattern visible. I dont know y the back and sides look longer even though I cut them shorter other than the angle of cutting and the fact that the hair there is thicker. Not quite getting y ppl are saying that a buzz cut makes hair loss less visible. Id appreciate getting your guys' opinions on this matter.

sorry to hear it didnt work for you. it'll work for some early diffuse thinners but i guess it all depends on the level of hairloss you have.

I am not really that long into diffusing. In fact, when I had my hair grown out longer It was pretty hard to tell that I am balding-you couldnt see through my scalp. Now however, u can clearly see through my scalp and the contrast between the sides and front is visible.

Shaving your head and getting a tan is better than just buzzing your hair, because like you said it can look worse if you just use a clipper setting and go to town. You might wanna get a professional haircut next time from a stylist who will leave certain areas longer to make your hair look thicker because a buzz with a guard will show no mercy towards thinning spots.

If you didn't have the horseshoe pattern do you think it would be evident though? I mean, if your hairline was intact and the only problem that you had was that your hair is much thinner on top than on the sides, do you think people would be able to tell then? It may be that you are being too a*** about it - although maybe you are right and it is mjore noticeable. I just find that I am often much too critical of myself and notice things that others would not.

It does become see through.

The struggle is not to hide your scalp- it is all about equalizing thinning and non thinning areas. Hair length overpronounces thinning.

It might look better if you go shorter than grade 3. If you want to grow it back try taking kelp tablets, they are supposed to make your hair grow quicker.

Exactly what he said.

If your really uphappy with the difference between top and sides, then buzz the sides even shorter... such as 1, instead of 2, it'll make a big difference. This is what I get... I always get it at least 2 gaurds apart... 3(top) and 1(sides) or 2(top) and 0(sides)

I started with a grade 2 and my dark receeded hairline is noticable even with a tan. I now buzz my hair every 5 days to a number 0 (no guard). The hairline is less noticable and looks much better. Also it is great for applying topical solutions.

Thx for the replies. My hair has been growing out pretty well, it definetly looks better now than it did before. I guess you really do have to experiment to see what length suits u best, ill also keep that 2 guards difference tip in mind for next time.

depends on what kind of loss u have....

If your temples have receded to anything worse than a Norwood 1.5 , then its going to be glaringly apparent, because you cannot use the hair above the bald temples to cover them as you can when the hair is longer. What buzzing does help hide is slight diffuse thinning on top , say DA 1 - 1.5
(DA = diffuse alopecia , DA0 = No thinning, DA1 = Slight thinning, visible only under bright lights or with wet hair, DA2 = Moderate thinning, visible under normal lights but still adequate , DA3 = Marked thinning, coverage no longer adequate even with dry hair under normal lighting , DA4 = no appreciable amount of hair remaining, equivalent to the regular NW6 or NW7) If you are worse than a DA2 , however, buzzing will not really be able to hide the thinning, even when the sides are shorter than the top. You NEED a certain minimum amount of non-miniaturized hair to be able to camouflage the thinning. Also, anything more than very slight crown thinning will also be readily apparent with a buzz.
Its not easy to hide diffuse thinning worse than DA2 w/o using a concealer. So buzzing then just makes one look better, "neater", as opposed to a sickly combover. Its like, "OK, I know that I'm thinning, and I'm not going to hide it".
Cheers,
Arjun

thats it. I wear my hair in a #2 top and #1 sides. I missed the first couple years or so of my thinning because it looks so good. It will not conceal your hairloss unless your in a very early stage, but it will make it look more balanced and certainly better than having your hair grown out, especially if you are diffuse. The longer mine gets over #2 the shittier it looks.
