yes it is shown to be effective in the crown as well as the mis scalp area

for some it's does well for the hairline, but not always

and it is known to not do anything for the temples

well, as i'm sure you know, everyone is unique and reacts differently to finasteride, but my experience from use and from reading this forum is finasteride is not nearly as effective on the front as on the crown. so you'll continue to lose ground there, although more slowly than without finasteride. i suggest adding minoxidil foam to the hairline for an extra boost, that's what i'm doing and it seems to work pretty well.

Well at the very least I was hoping it would help maintain hair in that area, even better if it would reverse miniaturization in the front.

Regardless of what that posted diagram says, I consider the "crown" to be the whole top part of the scalp. In other words, it's mostly the mid-scalp area.

what does "FHL" in that picture stand for?

And, is that a receded hairline in that picture?

most likely "Front Hair Line" (FHL)

and the diagram looks like a true NW2 IMO
