Does Finasteride work better if you start early with more hair?

I'm 17 and although my temples have receded more than anyone my age, my hair is still thick under all lighting. My dermatologist did diagnose me with AA and did say I had the beginnings of thinning in the vertex, but that is only noticeable to someone obsessed with losing hair (me).

I've been taking Propecia (0.5mg) the last few days. Feel great. I still have a full head of thick hair and would be the happiest guy in the world if I mantained it into my 30s.

What do you think my chances are since I started treatment for male pattern baldness in its earlist stages?

If you saw my other thread, the best thing one can do is treat this garbage early. If you got a full head of hair and started propecia, there's a very good chance that in 5 years you will still have the same amount of hair if not more. There's a lot of treatments in the pipeline right meow so hold out for the next few years until there's something better out.

You did good by catching it early..

The earlier, the better. It's much easier to maintain what you'ver got now than to regrow.

17 is too young to be taking Propecia IMO. Did the derm actually prescribe it?

Yes, my dermatologist prescribed it to me.

My growth plates have fused, I'm 18 in a couple months and I'm pretty much done with puberty according to a few different doctors I've seen.

But despite all that, I actually posted a thread on another forum asking if 17 was too young for Propecia. Why do you think so?

If your NW2 no point in waiting around, most people on here would start ASAP when any sign of hair loss occurs. The general feeling is its nice to take hair loss treatments when your more mature around 19-21, this way your body is fully developed and you have a mature hair line and head.

You may feel your fully developed, but anyone can change a bit even when in your early 20s to mid 20s in shape and size.

In other words your 18 so go for it.... id start minoxidil and finasteride ASAP

I did, I've been taking Propecia for almost a week now and feel good. Yeah, I've seen people on forums jump on the Big 3 just because the corners of their NW0 are looking thin. I'm a full blown NW2 with no temples at 17 so this really is my only option.

But still, are there any studies or theories that Finasteride could inhibit any late growth? Like those changes in shape and size you mentioned.

17 is not a bad age as I wish I started around then. But I am not a doctor :gay2:

I really would not worry about stopping any late growth, most times when your 18-19ish you do not change that much... its rare anyone grows taller for example in there 20s.... most guys will sadly grow outwards as in get fat and fat big boned lol

You really have to consider the options @ 17-18 you have but one time and chance to keep your hair and try and enjoy life with as much hair on your head that you still have left. Its pointless to worry what may or not be later on in life, and as I said chances of a positive growth spurt is low its rare some get taller... most get bigger by means of fatness !

I agree with everything you said, but my question is

what are my chances of at least keeping the hair I have?

If I lose anymore at all it will be impossible to cover up.
