Does minoxidil on its own make your hair worse

Obviously there are a ton of people who use minoxidil successfully for years, notwithstanding your own experiences. It doesn't fly off the shelves in every drugstore, non-prescription, because it destroys people's hair and it's especially dangerous, LOL. There are also a good number of people who have very unwanted side effects with finasteride. So I think you're being a bit unfair to the poster here. Of course one could be more wary of finasteride than min, it does make sense.

If you're a guy who is losing his hair and wants to keep it then I respect you if you take finasteride and get side effects, it's a big decision and unfortunately you were one of the few who gets sides, you deserve the right to better treatments that we currently do not have because no one cares about hair loss. If, however you are a guy who wants to keep his hair but chooses not to take finasteride/dutasteride because of the scaremongering stories you hear on the internet, then I have 0 respect for you if you continue to complain about hair loss or even try looking into alternate options. The options are there and finasteride is safe, if you're scared to take it then don't complain about hair loss. Lord knows that dick gets used so often anyway, it would be a tragedy if you got 60% libido and watery semen for a month.

I was wondering if minoxidil on its own without finasteride makes your hair worse. I was planning to take it as I have thinning hair but without finasteride (due to side effects and please don't encourage me to get on to finasteride as i never will). Also I'm not talking about the initial shedding stages which it goes through to regrow new hair. I'm wondering if for example after a year or two of use, will the minoxidil stop working and make my hair worse? Please people that use finasteride and minoxidil together, do not answer this question as I only want answers from those who used minoxidil on its own. Thanks

I was in your shoes 8 months ago. I thought Rogaine would give me two years at least. I started applying it and regained almost my original density as I started treatment early. Everything was good until 7month mark. Then baam! Suddenly the hair loss was back. I had just the same opinion about finasteride as you do now. I never even was gonna consider it. But I love my hair more than the risk of those rare risk of side effects that a very minority of people get. I got on Finasteride and in one month basically the shedding has completely stopped. Zero side effects yet. I am only 18 BTW.

If I was 16, I would wait till 17 and get on a small dose like 0.25mg or something.
Say goodbye to your hair without Finasteride.

Wow your ignorance is bliss, it's probably your dick that's not being used so often. I don't want your respect, just because you took the risk of having the function of your dick taken away doesn't mean we all are, this is why I didn't want people like you to comment on this thread when I asked the question

Was the hair loss back worse than before you started? Or did you just go back to your regular hair loss? F*ck finasteride

I take it that you understand that minoxidil is also only for men of age 18 to 65...

Just either get on minoxidil or don't get on minoxidil, nobody including yourself knows what it will do for your hair until you try it - you can ask the question a million times over but it will not help to give any certainty for you on the possible results. For some it's amazing, for others is disastrous, just like any other hair loss treatment.

P.S. It's easy to say f•ck finasteride now, but £100 says that 3 years from now you will register under a different user name on this forum and be asking about taking finasteride :D

It was slightly worse than before. I am not sure if it was a second shed cuz the itch was back. I got scared and threw in Finasteride. Thank god, the shed has subsided to a minimal amount and the itch has gone too. I don't have much of a recording hairline problem. I guess I m like norwood 0.5 or something. Just the thinning scares the **** out of me.
If you actually do love your hair, I am definitely sure you are gonna post a thread asking about Finasteride later. minoxidil rarely causes any further progression of hairloss. In a huge majority of patients it stops the hairloss and increases the thickness of the hairs.
My advice : Start minoxidil. Start finasteride on a low dose and see how it goes for you.

Goodluck!

Cheers mate, if you're from uk I'm not sure if you've heard of the Belgravia hair clinic, they're the leading hair clinic in the the uk and they provide alternatives to propecia but it's really expensive. I'll probably look into that. But thank you for the positive comment bud! Really appreciate it as opposed to the others that were commenting on this thread, I'll probably start with Kirkland foam and see how that goes :)

Haha I have heard of the Belgravia centre. Yeah the alternatives they have are spironolactone cream and some other stuff like that I guess. Minoxidil would be the best action currently. Start applying it and don't worry about the sheds and stuff. I pray that by the time you are 17-18 you make up your mind to consider Finasteride.
Keep us posted!

Not here to encourage the OP to get on finasteride since he, obviously, doesn't want that and he should NOT take it anyway since he's only 16. I am here to share my little experience:

NW2, 26 years old, my hair means the world to me (almost waist-length btw), 8 months on finasteride and yes I am suffering from 1 real side effect. First, I thought that I was getting gyno and kept obsessed about it for months but then again maybe my chest was always like that, now even if it caused gyno, it's really mild and NOT noticeable at all even when bare-chested.

The real side effect I am getting now is watery semen. I am OKAY with that since, according to many resources and responses, it doesn't mean that it does NOT have sperm in it and I am not planning to conceive for at least 5 to 7 years from now anyway, I've also done my research and figured out that watery semen may 1) resolve by itself at the 1-year mark or 2) resolve at a lower dose or 3) resolve with zinc supplements.

Bottom line: there are TONS of ways to deal with watery semen but unfortunately, only ONE way to deal with hair loss and that is finasteride (as a 1st line defense).

Take minoxidil. It won't make your hair worse, the only thing that may happen is you don't respond to the medicine. The drug attacks the balding process through different mechanisms than blocking DHT. minoxidil can keep you above baseline for 3-5 years

Pfft. Don't say stuff you are not sure of. Minoxidil keeps you above the baseline as long as your genes permit it to. If you have aggressive balding minoxidil might just stop in 6 months. But yes, with an 5 alpha blocker,it is shown to work for a very long time. Maybe even 10 years.

Idiot you asked the question in the title of the thread, "Does minoxidil on its own make your hair worse". I answered saying that it can and you say that's the sort of answer you don't want on this thread?
I know guys like you, you come to this forum, look at all the potential treatments and within 5 minutes you've determined what you do and don't want to take. You'll disregard everything science and common sense has shown you just because of some scare stories you hear on the internet. You think hair is your god given right, newsflash it isn't, and if you're not even willing to contemplate all the proven treatments then you will go bald.

Go easy man. The kid is just 16. Obviousl he is confused with all the fear mongering online about Finasteride.
Keep calm and explain. If listens it is beneficial for him and if he dosent it isn't your loss. Cut him some slack.

No, are you retarded or do I need to give you a walk through of what you said in your last answer? You clearly stated you don't have respect for those who are afraid to go in finasteride, I'm afraid to go on to finasteride because I had an uncle who suffered from the side effects. I don't care if you have 0 respect or tolerance for those who don't want to go on it, quite frankly no one does, and those are the types of 'comments' i didn't want to see. And I've been thinning since I was 15 so I've been researching for a year so no I don't make up my mind in five minutes

For over twenty years I used minoxidil on it's own. It grew back my hairline when I was twenty years old (a NW2 to NW0) on 2%. A board certified dermatologist prescribed it to me Minoxidil is good at regenerating hair that has recently been lost. When we're young, are bodies can heal better because we get much better REM sleep then when we are older. For my experience, it retarded my baldness. My father was a Norwood 5 at my age.

I think the negativity from minoxidil is because it only works for half of the men who take five percent. However, as far as hormones, it is side effect free.

It will start a shed before the hair grows into overdrive (grows faster/longer). But this is only where you put it on your scalp, and you should see regrowth as soon as you see the shedding. If it doesn't regrow the lost hair right away, after a month, than minoxidil will probably not work for you.

You are smart to investigate your options before trying them out. Since you are young, and your body is generating lots of growth hormones, you will probably be a responder.

Good luck, and please keep us updated.

Is that so? Can you please post a picture of your hairline?
