Back in 2004, I did steroids, namely Testosterone and Dianabol. Both are extremely dangerous to your hairline. Steroids aren't known to make you bald per se, many men don't go bald and still use the drugs. But, they do quicken up the balding process, if you are destined to go bald generally.

I remember being about 14.. started styling my hair, it looked great, suddenly the girls came'a flocking.. It showed me the power that just merely styling hair can give you. The confidence mainly. So I became Hair Vain.

But, what i can't remember, is what my hairline was like back then, as, prior to steroid use, the hairline was still slightly horse shoe shaped.. but it was easy to hide and style over, no one ever noticed.

Since doing the steroids, about 6 months after it happened, my hair began to thin, to the point where to make it styleable i had to shovel on the hair products to give it some thickness. This is where im at now.. when looking at my hair when it's just been shampooed, it looks as though each strand of hair has been cut into 3's! It's weak, looks dead, dry and it's hard now to hide my receeding hairline.

Being quite a good looking guy, this take's it's toll on ones confidence, self esteem and definately has major psychological implications.

Suffice to say, i stopped the steroids, which were used in a naive phase of my life brought on through stress and reckless thinking. Sadly, it is the worst mistake i have ever made regarding my body.

I have been to the doctors, he said not to worry, be proud you still have hair and blah blah blah!! Not what i wanted to hear, he also clearly tried to put me off any propecia use, as he claimed it negates on your sex drive!

I would love to conquer this, It does linger in my mind, checking the mirror etc, the more forehead i see, the more depressed i become..

To imagine how weak my front hairline is, imagine the roman legionnary, and it's frontline is a few hundred of old people with hip replacements and arthritis. That's how weak it is.

I would love some advice off any of you with success stories or those who have already begun their treatment and those just generally in my situation.

Please help. Thanks.

How much are you willing to spend on a permanent "cycle" of hair-loss remedies?

Anything into the hundreds of £'s

But, Would i have to take hair growth type drugs for the rest of my life to just maintain what results i get?

Im in a stage now, where im thinking, don't let it get you down! I could just shave it all off very very short.. and if it goes like a monks hairdo, I could always go totally bald! Right Said Fred Style!!
But, there's hope I believe! Im not that far gone!

Whats the main difference between the topical shampoos and the FDA approved hair growth drugs? Effectiveness? Results? Sides?

On doing Steroids, I was very negligent of the side effects, almost ignoring the ones I didn't want to get. Weird thing is, the Hair thinning didn't come during the Cycle.. It came 6 months after, when i was least expecting it..

By the way, My father is bald. My Grandad went bald middle aged, and my other grandad wore a wig! So, male pattern baldness is probably a likelihood!

Yes with finasteride or minoxidil you will have to stick to it for the rest of your life or until something better comes out. Well of course you can drop it but you will lose whatever benefit you had gained from it.

Well, generally the sides come with the effectiveness. There seem to be more sides connected with finasteride/Dutasteride than anything else. But it is the most effective drug out there. AND I don't mean to scare you off of it because:
1 It is your best weapon against male pattern baldness
2 The percentage of people who get sides is not that high
3 Almost all sides are reversible if you stop the treatment.

There is a lot of useful information on this site about anything you could want to know. Good luck.

Did you get huge on the roids??
Dont your nuts shrink as well??

I did grow obviously.. Yeah the nuts shrink! And you're libido goes into some kind of X-men form! But after, it drops below sea levels. I would advise against using steroids.

Thanks for the info :) ..

Almost all sides are reversible? That sounds worrying. I hate discussing potential drug use and side effects as it is oh so reminiscent of Steroid use.

I am mostly interested in Dutasteride. Say if it worked for me, and i had to continue useage of it until something new came out.. how much would i be paying per year?

I don't really know about dutasteride... depends on where in the world you are.
Besides most people prefer to try finasteride first. It is the only one of the two that is FDA approved for hairloss.
Browse around check out the differences between the two. Dutasteride is more powerful, but only you can decide if you want something that blocks both type 1 and type 2 5alpha reductase. finasteride only blocks type 2 which is enough for most people.
If i should provide my own very unscientific advice then it would be to try out finasteride and see how that works. IMO dutasteride should be your last resort. But I have never tried dutasteride and don't plan to although I am planning to quit finasteride.
You seem to have some experience with drugs. So take your time and evaluate risks and benefits before you decide. But what most people will tell you is to go with the big 3:

Finasteride
Minoxidil (Maybe start out without the minoxidil as many find it a hassle to apply etc)
Nizoral shampoo

Hey man I feel ya. I`ve been working out for maybe 9 years prolly done steroids for 5 of them, about a year ago I really started noticing the temples start their dissapearing act.

I read all I could about hair loss and basically stopped using the juice and got on some treatments. I`m seeing my temples slowly come back and this is what I`m using.

Generic 5% minoxidil
(AM and PM)

Azelaic Acid powder made into a 5% topical solution
(AM and PM)

Nizoral (2%)
once Every other day

I just started last week with Fincar (Finasteride) 5mg tabs ordered from Genhair...I didn`t want to bother crushing or splitting them up so I put ten tabs in a vial with 50ml of Grain Alcohol and made an oral solution - I just draw 1cc up per day, so I`m taking 1mg per day, you have to shake it up because alot settles fast, but it`s very easy and super cheap.

Remember bro, if you are going to seriously start treatments, things are gonna look worse before they get better.

Good luck man.
