I think this is a great idea, as long as you look good / can live with the shaved look.
I'll go as far as to say this :
If you have mild to moderate male pattern baldness (NW2-4) and shave your head, and it looks acceptable, you can go ahead and opt for a FUE transplant to get back to ~NW1.5-2 to frame your face.
You take medications as they come out (There should be RU3 or another topical anti-androgen within 5 years).
Then when/if your loss continues to the point you need to do something you have two options
1. FUE more hair into the receded areas (Keeping in mind not to take too much to have a poor looking donor). Or look at BHT for a solution. Ideally, if the german cloned hair follicles come to market within 10 years or so, get that.
If this isn't an option:
2. Shave it all, get the pigmentation. Do a low density/graft count transplant over the pigmented areas so you still feel stubble. - [Although I'm not sure what it would be like to have only partial stubble felt if someone ran their hand over your head, but still better then not feeling any hair, lol]

Agree with most.
It probably could look good if it was done to a NW2-3 hairline and not so straight/perfect a bit rugged, but again, what happens when your hair at the side changes colour and goes white?Or the ink fading in the sun/weather beaten years that pass you by especially if you live in a warm climate.
Then the other side. What if it works extra brilliant ,looks good and does not fade at all, but the Tobias Funke doo comes into fashion when you are 65 and you are still 'the strange hair man', both at 25, because you don't have enough hair and at 65 because your friends are balding but you have the tatood hair.

yeah it doesn't really transition into a middle/late aged hairstyle
i suppose that requires either
1. HM coming out before that (Likely going to be the german style - grow hair in a lab and transplant like normal.)
2. The ink to fade out completely over a certain time (how obvious / weird this is idk)
3. To be removeable via laser (see #2)
I don't suppose you could just tell people you shave to no hair at all after you get it removed? hmm.

I'm in this position right now. I just turned 24, and my hairline has receded like crazy, and my crown is barely visible. The hairs on the top of my head are miniaturizing... I'm forming a horseshoe.
I have a good shape head for the buzzed/shaved look... but my lighter skin color and my darker hair, even after I shave against the grain, I still look/feel like a man in his late 50's due to my receding.
I've already done the whole finasteride / minoxidil thing when I was 20... it's not worth all the sides it was giving me.
So, I'm deeply considering this -- I wonder if anyone on this board has had this work done?
I've been considering this option myself for a week or so now. Although more as a back up plan if things go south cause I currently have plenty of hair worth saving. Im a diffuse thinner and I dont think I'll ever lose my hair line, but if the meds stop working I very well could thin all over the top. In that case, i would consider shaving my head on a #1 guard (0 guard too short IMO) and use the thinning stubble to blend in with the ink.
It's certainly not for everyone, but it's an option for some to consider. And we need all the options we can get. Personally I'd rather have this done, giving me the illusion of having a full head of hair, than the thinning look. Also, this does not have to be a permanent thing. You have the option of having it removed later on. Think of this as a 'permanent' concealer like toppik, only it doesnt wash out every day after a shower. Could bide you some time while waiting for the many 'cures' to finally come to light.
