dutasteride Dosage

Hey all,

I'm thinking of starting up on dutasteride, after 3 years on finasteride and I'm still thinning out and receding.

I heard that 2.5mg is the best dosage, but that's 5 pills a day = crazy expensive + seems like a lot of medicine to be taking.

What dosage do you guys recommend? Anybody with success on dutasteride, what dosage did you use?

THANKS

I'd stick with the approved dosage (0.5 mg/day), or less. Going with a larger dosage gets you into Unchartered Territory, and pioneers into Unchartered Terrritory often end up pincushioned with arrows! :)

Venturing into uncharted territory can be equally hazardous, or so I've heard.

Inre: Avodart dosage... I've taken one capsule daily since August '03 and seen modest thickening on the crown & mid-scalp - continuing the work done by finasteride. & finally erasing all signs of male pattern baldness in these areas - and also an end to the dreaded frontal thinning, but maintenance only, no gains in density up here - points to hairline.

I think my hair would be safer if I got on dutasteride. I just am a bit worried about inhibiting 93% of the DHT production in my body. I just don't know if my body needs it for something, or if 5ar2 is needed to work on other hormones too.

Dutasteride has a longer half life at higher doses. If you take less than 1 per day, it is possible you will never build up any in your system and will never get a stronger effect than propecia. If you do 5x per day, you will build up a lot in your system and if on it long enough might not be able to burn it all off as fast as you are adding it. We know that 0.5mg reaches a steady state. We don't know that of 2.5mg.

It was clearly stated in the Gisleskog et al studies of dutasteride that the non-saturable elimination pathway for the drug prevents it from building-up in an unlimited fashion just from exceeding a certain (alleged) threshold intake dosage. You don't have to worry about that possibility. It won't happen.

I took .5mg every other day for 5 years. My hair got better and looks great but it also made me put on weight that I couldn't lose through diet/exercise. Gradually switched to every third day (past couple months) and then eliminated it altogether (a few weeks ago), and I'm getting compliments on how i've lost weight all the time. I'm 5'11 and was around 195-200 on dutasteride, haven't been to the gym or bothered to step on a scale lately, but I definitely look and feel leaner and better. Hoping topicals, revita, and vitamins can maintain... it sucks to feel like you have to choose between being bald and being pudgy.

Was on 0.5 mg a day for about 9 months back in 2005.

Hair looked great initially, saw thickening and some regrowth. No sides except for dry skin; I felt as though my libido was BETTER than the previous 5 years on finasteride.

Hit the 6 month mark and my hair started looking pretty bad. Everyone started commenting on it and it was pretty embarassing. Decided it was just a shed and rode it out for a few more months, but after 9 months, and my condition worsening, I hopped off and went back to finasteride.

My situation did not improve back on finasteride, but maybe slowed things down a bit.

wesleyBelgium,

1. Have you seen regrowth using topical flutamite?

2. Or the regrowth that you achieved was due to the dutas?

3. Did you add topical flutamide than topical spironolactone because of effectiveness?

well its still to soon to tell if the fluta boost my regrowth
but i can say it makes my little regrowth hairs thicker...

yep , i added topical flutamide for what it can do...
its great stuff , mutch stronger then spironolactone...

its also in the mdf topical and in some other expensive minoxidils...

i dont use a full dose , a little less or somedays half dose , because its also absorbed systematic... but only a small %
its alot safer then taking oral spironolactone... and mutch stronger even topical....

i saw regrowth when i was 9 months on duta , and in combination with the spectral dnc-l

its difficult to say what stuff did the job, sinds i use alot of products...

hope the boost the regrowth further with our custom hw topical 3 and my lemming laserhelmet thats almost ready...

tnx dude,

Nice to hear that topical flutamide is much stronger than topical spironolactone. Have you seen any evidence that top flutam is stronger than top spironolactone?because I believe the same. Now I am on oral spironolactone, if something goes wrong I will switch to topical flutamide.

What dosage should I take if I take proscar 1.25mg/day ?
I don't want to drop finasteride and just add dutas ?

Why are people taking 0.5 mg per day and not less, for example 0.5 mg every other day?

Isnt 0.5 mg per day a bit too much?

My reasoning is that 0.5 is for prostate problems and like the proscar it then should be less mg needed for hairloss?!

I wouldn't try to make any comparisons with finasteride, because of the somewhat different ways that dutasteride and finasteride work. For example, there's probably a greater range of effect against male pattern baldness with different dutasteride doses than there is with finasteride doses.

I noticed progression on finasteride .5mg and then started dutasteride 2mg each day for a month or so then 1mg each day with minoxidil 5%...

I think I had a little thickening, and now after 3 years or so of the dutasteride 1mg/day believe I am stable. Hair is some thicker and slightly improved on the apex. Frontal hairline is stable, but only minimally improved if at all. I count that as a success as trend was clearly towards loss before current meds.

I did notice some tolerable side effects when starting dutasteride which were likely related to a decreasing prostate volume at age 37 (low volume watery ejaculate, some "dribbling" of urine after finishing that had NEVER been an issue before). These side-effects from lower DHT in the tissue are now less noticable with time. Overall I am content with the benefits/side-effects.

As far as "why" 1mg rather than .5mg or 2.5mg, I think I have simply chosen the point at which price is tollerable with generics.... When first researching this issue it seemed (in the phase II Avodart hair loss studies) that there was some benefit in increasing doses above .5mg, but as further trials were not performed ideal dose is really not proven. Meaning, we are left to look at the info ourselves and make our best educated guess.
