I agree pretty much Younghair. Doctors don't usually like us medically treating something they view as cosmetic IMHO. They don't seem to, on average, want us messing around with our bodies unless it's "necessary" IMHO.

I can respect that. But....... she still made a stupid, knee jerk statement IMHO. I mean, she could have just said "male pattern baldness isn't important enough IMHO for you to mess around with your physiology".

Well, I don't respect it at all TBH. It's not for ER medics to make value judgements on someone's informed choices.

many people are not aware of the horror finasteride can inflict upon susceptible individuals.

Actually, it is their place and their opinion. An ER physician is licensed to tell a patient what they feel is best for their long term health, so that those patients don't come back to the ER. The thread creator is neither licensed, nor is he informed when it comes to medicine...especially, pharmacology.

It's up to the patient whether they want to listen or not.

I see no problem here.

Acne is not life threatening. Does that mean it should never be treated? Does that make you shallow and insecure if you choose to treat your acne?

I know people who think that men who do any more than wash their face to treat acne are vain men. Yea, those people are older and on the down side of ugly too.

ER is there to patch you up and send you out. Or are you suggesting it's the finasteride that put him in ER?!

If the OP wanted advice on finasteride, he could see a general practitioner, a dermatologist, or even an endocrinologist if he was concerned about his hormones. It's not an ER doctor's specialty. finasteride wouldn't send you to ER even if you at the whole damn packet.

You can be damn sure that if she started losing hair, and there was a similar drug for women that would prevent further loss, she'd be on it like a shot.

I didn't read anything after the bolded and underlined, because you've pretty much proven your own ignorance with regards to Emergency Medicine.

So an ER Doctor just throwing out an opinion to a patient with no back up information or real facts is responsible. Holy friggin christ! Seriously Doctor just please attempt to see a discussion involving doctors without total bias and blinders. Perhaps the original poster is taking things out of context but on the surface, no professional should just blast out opinions without also providing evidence.

It's up to the patient whether they want to listen or not.

What an even more idiotic statement. If anything, patients go to a doctor to answer their health care questions and at least provide expert advice. You seem to want to remove any responsibility from people who are the backbone of the medical profession.
So I worked in construction design for a number of years, when people payed me for a design consultation, I didn't hand it over and say "here you go, do whatever you like with this design." They friggin depended on me to give them sound design advice as I was a goddam "professional". Seriously man, I generally enjoy your commentary but you give the impression that a doctor can basically do no wrong. To me you seem to say its the patients fault if they heed the incorrect advice of an MD and doctors are licensed to say whatever the hell they believe is correct no matter if they provide evidence or if they know the patients history. Your response deeply frustrates me!

To be honest, unless you've worked in the ER (which I have) you're opinion really doesn't matter. I grow tired of people bashing doctors for having an opinion. Especially, when their opinion is an educated and an informed one. The vast majority of physicians are highly intelligent and are quite aware of developments in particular fields.

The poster has no idea what sort of qualifications the ER physician might really have. She may be quite versed in all drugs. In fact, many physicians were once pharmacologists or pharmacists. Even more have worked in Emergency Medicine in some form and have been forced to learn about drug toxicities. If you look up finasteride in any given medically approved drug reference, you'll see that finasteride is considered to be hepatotoxic and its efficacy is definitely in question.

You all have turned a very complex argument into a very simple argument, because like the majority of society, when it comes to personal health everyone here views it as black and white. Personal health and the opinion of medical professionals should never be viewed in such a way.

Even my incredibly brilliant dermatologist was very hesitant to give me proscar and I'm a friend of the guy. In order for me to take it, I was required to get my PSA and liver enzyme tested regularly.

So, like I said, I don't see a problem here.

By the way, you can be as frustated as you want, because physicans do and say what is right for their patients. You have no idea what they have to go through just to provide what many would consider mediocre care. They practically have to sell their souls to provide high quality care.

I hope you're young and you'll mature with age. You obviously have way too much faith in the medical profession...authority figures are generally wrong about much more than you probably think.

Experience in the ER room, the doctors education and/or experience is irrelevant. What doctors go through in school and their jobs is irrelevant. The original poster said the doctor simply said finasteride was bad, nothing else. In this case this is irresponsible and ignorant on the doctors part...period. Let's deal with this one incident and not attempt to qualify things and mitigate her poor performance. It's not a big deal, most doctors are exceptional and perhaps this doctor is normally exceptional, but in the case she just did not perform well.
I don't get it, how can you approve of a professional dropping a blanket statement with no backup evidence or discussion, i hope you perform better for your patients. I accept that the original poster could have taken this out of context (and pointed that out earlier), but based on the facts presented, this doctor is wrong. Thousands and thousands of other doctors prescribe finasteride for hairloss and it is approved by the government. Shouldn't this have been part of her discussion with the patient along with a discussion on potential side effects and/or any other negative effects, not to mention her personnel opinions. Shouldn't we expect more out of a doctor then "hey that's bad for you." I This is one of many patients she most likely treated that day, hopefully she provided better services to the others. I guess I just don't understand simple reasoning because I don't have an MD.
IMO, Doctor is just reacting to negativity expressed towards doctors by the member of this website and the general population. You have gone into protective mode because you feel doctors have been unfairly maligned and now you have lost the ability to judge things fairly.
