Excessive Body Hair

Hi all. While I understand this forum is mostly for hair loss talk, and really the reason I found my way here, I am not too concerned about my hair loss yet. So keep in mind that the reason for my post is not hair loss related (I have enough information about it), but about another issue:

I have excessive body hair, and I guess it would make sense, because androgens are the culprit with my future hair loss problem (already thinning and I'm in my early 20s), but I was wondering what, if any, effects that androgen blockers have on combating/eliminating/reducing body hair. I've seen that Propecia/Proscar has been used to combat female hirsutism, so wondering if it does work on men as well.

I'm lucky that I don't have back hair, but I do have thick, dense, terminal hair on my arms (which extend up high), my stomach and chest, and legs, and even have hair sprouting up on my shoulders.

My questions:
1) What, if any, androgen blockers have you been on?
2) What, if any, effect did they have on the amount of your body hair?
3) How long did it take for these effects to kick in?

So I guess these questions are really about a specific side effect of androgen blockers... Thanks to everyone who replies.

I can't answer your questions but I do know that peppermint/spearmint reduces body hair. I have tried it and it works (peppermint and spearmint tea)

Some people on this forum have reported less body hair over the years using finasteride or dutasteride.

I'm sure it helps to stunt the growth of new body hair but I doubt you'll see a lot disappear.

Almost 2 years on propecia and my body hair has drastically decreased. My legs are totally patchy (I won't go out in shorts in anymore), *** hair is completely gone, and my chest hair is half of what it used to be. Shaved my head recently and when I took a bath instead of a shower for the first time in a while the tub was loaded with hair. I know for sure now that the hair wasn't coming from my head.

Other than that the hair on my head is great (it didn't seem like I would shed more than a few a day before I shaved it), and libido is same as always.

I drank a peppermint (and then later spearmint) tea for over 2 months everyday, I saw a reduction in body hair, and my body hair was shedding a lot more.

It sounds like the only problem you had is patchy leg hair, otherwise benefits lol.

Yes I've also heard this.. so it drastically reduces your body hair? Did you notice one was more effective than the other?

A cup of tea a day I'm guessing?

Interesting... so it's only patchy on the legs? How long did that take? Was it gradual? When did you notice the first signs of decrease in body hair?

Anyone else get the same results?

Around 2 cups a day. It wasn't a drastic change but it was noticeable for sure. I know that peppermint is a mixture of spearmint and watermint while spearmint is just pure spearmint...so I would say spearmint is stronger. I was unable to measure effectiveness between the two mints.

In my case, I believe finasteride may have stopped the growth of new body hair (which is great, I hate body hair).

I hope it has this effect on me. I have hair everywhere lol!

Most very hairy people have hairloss.

But there are exceptions to this as you can see with Alec Baldwin and Robin Williams.

Andy Garcia also comes to find but I feel like those people are rare though. I think if you are hairy and have no hair loss you must have extremely DHT resistant follicles.

Yeah I don't agree with this.

How much DHT you produce doesn't really matter--its how sensitive your follicles are to androgens that does.

I has been said that DHT stimulates masculine effects on the male, specifically scalp hair loss (male pattern baldness) and body hair growth and that is also my user experience. Not sure what else it is good for except necessary during puberty for genital growth. Just don't take to much of my kick *** Testosterone please, I need that stuff.

The only place it's patchy is on my legs. It looks terrible, kinda like I shaved sections off (I can see the spots/follicles? where the hair used to be). Everywhere else there's just not as much hair as there once was. I guess it was gradual, but it's hard to say for sure how long it took. After a little more than a year or so on finasteride (I think) is when I first noticed that my legs looked kinda weird and when I looked at the rest of my body I could definitely tell that I had less hair. Now after about 2 years on the stuff I can say that I've had a drastic reduction in body hair.

I'm wondering if there's a correlation between decreased body hair and being a good responder to finasteride because the hair on my head is great. finasteride stopped the loss completely and I've had some minor regrowth. Any other good responders to finasteride lose a lot of body hair?

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

I'm sure there's a lot more of you who have experience with finasteride though :p Care to share your experiences with this side effect (even if experienced no body hair loss)?

I'd be curious of this as well, I don't hear enough reports.

My dad is a pretty hair guy...not that bad by any means, but he's grown more body hair through the years, we've made jokes about it. He said it looks like I have less than he did at my age, but I can still tell I have the potential to grow more--some of my blonder hairs have gotten a little longer and darker over the past year and I have a few dark curly hairs that have grown out of say, the back of my arm etc.

If finasteride can stop that from ever getting any worse I'd be thrilled (though I'd rather keep all of my hair and regrow a bit)

I'm going to bump this.. hoping for more replies.. Comon', I know there's a lot more of you here who have used finasteride and have experiences with this (whether no change in body hair or a drastic change)..

I've read hundreds of times... reducing DHT has positive effects on scalp hair, and negative effects on body hair. To what extent I can't really tell you. P.S I have next to NO body hair. I'm the least hairy 18 year old male with Norwood 1.5 walking this planet (friends comment whether i wax my arms and chest), but I’m sure there’s plenty of time to grow some.

If your hair is thinning and you want to control your body hair. finasteride or dutasteride is a win, win for you.
