extreme treatment for dandruff

All medicines that can be easily bought at the pharm like nizoral, t/sal, selsun blue, etc. don't help me... Tried everything.

Want to talk to my derm to get a prescription for some more serious treatment ( may be some antifungal pills, etc. ). I don't trust derms much :) , thinking he would push some well-known for him treatment which will do not much for me. I ask you, guys.

What can you advise? What are the effects and how quickly did you manage to control the dandruff?

P.S.: can that the scalp denies shampoos that worked very well long time be the sign that the scalp does not need any antifungal anymore? May be, the dandruff is the cause of this shampoos, since the major peeling I see after I take the shower, which didn't happen before (when shampoo worked well). Have anyone the same experience? :)

Hmmm, I got pretty bad dandruff and an itchy scalp, but the best shampoo that worked for me was... bum bum buuuuum.... Head and Shoulders. I know you've probably already tried it, but you didn't say it. So I thought I'd suggest it.

If it doesn't help, you might need to go see your dermatologist. Could be something else. I don't trust them either, but sometimes it's necessary.

I went to the derm last week or two weeks ago again considering alternate medications... I got the nizoral cream (because my seb. derm. was on my f*****g forehead at the time), selsun blue 2%, and talked to her about antifungal pills. THe selsun blue 2% works decent as long as you dont overuse it and cycle it with other shampoos.

My derm said the thing with those antifunal pills is they're very dangerous. There are two main ones, at least that I know of, those being Diflucan and one that starts with a N. Although i've read they can be very helpful (and i myself have/am considering taking them) they can potentially do damage to both your liver and immune system, in some cases even causing death. I'm no doctor this is just coming from a book i have called "The Yeast Connection" and what my derm told me. Good luck if you choose to use them, and let me know how it works out.

What topicals are you using? It sounds like you may be allergic to something...that happened to me, turns out I was allergic to propylene glycol.

Thanks, guys.

I haven't tried Head & Shoulders, because it is allways considered to be less powerful than listed by me. I think I'll try.

By the way, among all Selsun Blue was the best. It seems I've overused it... Now try to rotate.

I found there are Nizoral pills which are antifungal and rarely used to cure dandruff ( I think, rarely is related to that in most cases shampoos are very helpful ). They are dangerous, as it was said. But you can take them for a week ( while probably you won't bring too much harm ) and as promised kill the dandruff. Talk to my derm as I schedule the visit... And let you know then.

Some info about Diflucan... And Nizoral.

Nizoral is also the brand name for the anti-fungal pills. Sometimes they are prescribed as a dandruff treatment. But it's better to use Diflucan, since it at least has less side-effects. Both of them bring the damage to the liver if continuously used for a long time period.

Short periods with low dosage are not so harmful. And can really help. Under control of doctor. Found two most popular ways of taking the drugs :) For a week every day max dosage or for a month twice ( or thrice ) a week with 1/2 the dosage.

I'm tending to insist my derm to issue me a prescription for a small dosage of Nizoral or Diflucan...

Thanks, plat

By the way, is there any difference between seborrhea and seborrheic dermatitis? I guess no, but sometimes they are classified differently, which is pretty suprisingly to me.

asm, it's just my opinion but since I used to suffer allot with very bad dandruff, the more extreme I went the worse it got :( I at first tried Head and Shoulders and that seemed to work for a while but then my scalp got more dry! Yup more dry and the dandruff got worse. I also tried T-Gel but that stuff really weirded out my hair. So what I tried was to back off of the dandruff shampoos and sought to treat my scalp with some of the Aussie line of shampoos. Believe it or not that seemed to work for me. The stuff that I used at the time was the shampoo for normal to dry hair.

You're talking about choosing the right shampoo that suits best your scalp and I'm about anti-fungal pills, which kill (should :)) the dandruff from inside. It's well known that the long-term using of the shampoo that's not for you can cause the dandruff or make it got worse. But I'm not trying to dry or moisten. I want to kill the fungus on the scalp and see what's next :)

P.S. : You use shampoo for normal to dry hair. What type of hair do you have? I've allways had greasy hair, but I see the type is changing :) as I can afford not to wash hair daily (which I don't do, as daily showering now is a habbit) and also the condition of the skin is turned better and better... May be, my very bad dandruff is somehow related general changing in the body...

asm,

Seborrhea is the excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflamation (dermatitis) of the scalp due to the underlying seborrhea. You can have seborrhea (excessive oily scalp) without seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a stubborn condition, very difficult to deal with, that can be ameliorated but not cured 100% with the present pharmacologic or cosmetic armamentum.

Take care.

Many of you use Nizoral as an anti-androgen, which is supposed to be used as frequently as you wish... Nearly... :)

What about those who use Nizoral to cure the dandruff? Do you use it every other day, or twice a week? I've heard when you use anti-dandruff shampoo too frequently the fungus gets used to the anti-fungal components of the shampoo. I don't want Nizoral to lose it's effectivness as it appeared it helps at some degree.

1) So, does anyone of you use Nizoral every other day for a long-term period without losing it's effectiveness?

2) How many times a week do you use Nizoral so it hasn't been losing it's effectivness for a long-term period?

Thanks, guys

Three months ago I could bump into meds like Nizoral (pills), Diflucan, etc. just to cure my dandruff. I even got a prescription... But I decided to put it off and give the last chance to more mild medicine.

I threw out all anti-dandruff shampoos. Bought Freederm Ph-balance (mild shampoo for daily usage) and.... vinegar. Shampooing with only this and rinsing my hair with watered vinegar for almost three months since the first post in this thread I've not being experienced any severe dandruff, bumps on the skin... The effect was reached in a few days after starting the treatment.

I haven't had my hair and skin any clearer than now since I was at 9th grade in school. So, you might give it a try.
