so i have posted here a few times before but have been mostly reading and researching, evaluating peoples opinions and experiences

before we start i am on 0.5mg finasteride and nizoral 1% every other day plus multi vits and caffeine shampoo

right now i am having a bit of a downer with regards to my hair, its got real thing at the front and back too, ridiculously so and no sign of re growth, the main scalp is again thin but as i have long hair not so bad and the front, well i had a bit of a receding hairline before i started, more like a high hairline with a bit of thinning at the corners.

After 7 to 8 months this thinning has spread across the front hairline and deepend some what, my baseline is till kind of there but its gone to hell, and not really in a 'normal' or pattered way, one side is much straighter but thinner and the other is jagged an thinner! plus i never really had a problem with my crown or main scalp but hair is so thin you can see scalp at crown and mid scalp!

i guess i never noticed this until around june which would have been around 2 or 3 months into the finasteride taking. but now it seems like im getting worse each day! ive never noticed massive sheds, ive shed constantly, sometimes very little like 10 or 20 hairs and sometimes maybe towards a 100 but nothing out of the ordinary i guess. the hairs are thick and thin, dark and light. i have blonde/brown hair.

i have thought about dropping but the likelihood of returning to baseline is slim and also considered minoxidil of some form but again worried about losing more hair and not having it returned! my hair is softer than before im sure and perhaps even more oily?

have recently started nizoral

have itchy scalp, worse recently since starting nizoral?

basically i started finasteride with the intention of maintaining what i had and perhaps some regrowth. i could have lived with what i had but now i have gone beyond that really i just want to return to my baseline and be done with it!

would be appreciated of anybody has had a similar experience to me and come through or any advice

many thanks and apologies for long and slightly disjointed post!

I agree with the above statement. Hair is hair and not the end of the world.

I have a friend who is not even bald and does not even have male pattern baldness - but guess what? He shaves his head with a gilette blade every day. And no! He is not afro-carib... he is oriental. Surprise, surprise! And guess what? He is married.

Now...from the above! From experience! Long hair is not good! Oily hair is not good. So control that! I don't recommend using Nizoral (keto) everyday. I always recommended switching shampoo everyday.

eg. wash your hair every day! Day 1 - nizoral! Day 2 - l'oreal thickening shampoo; Day 3 - nizoral and so on.

You may find that the hairline / temple tends to recede anyway and then crown. Propecia (finasteride) will keep your hair and will tend to regrow hair only in the crown. Minoxidil is great for the crown but now so good with the hairline.

I have yet to find anything that regrows the hairline.

thanks for the replies, i do use nizoral every other day and use other shampoos on days off, like caffeine shampoo etc

i have some hope that i can thicken what i have and i do not think that unreasonable. i understand finasteride may not do much good in the hairline, but as i say my hairline wasnt amazing before but wasnt that bad, all that has happened since finasteride is it has thinned out, same as crown and not receded that much. this seems to have happened in a very short time which i put down to shedding on finasteride.

as i said my baseline hairline wasnt great but liveable, prob what you could call a mature hairline and looking back i am now cool with that. i just thought finasteride could maintain what i had, not really make it worse...but maybe this is the mid point? and i am due to regrow the shed hair?

who knows, but i feel a shave coming very soon if things do not get much better!

happy new year

Any hairloss treatment should be given at least 12 months before any efficacy can be evaluated.
Finasteride and ketoconazole (the stuff in nizoral) have a synergistic effect, and work better toghether than either of them alone.
You could do pretty well with that regime.

That being said; if nothing improves after 12 months of finasteride: up the dose. 0.5mg EOD is way below the proven effect dosage. Yes, some people (including myself) use it to effect, but 1mg/day is the dosage that, according to studies, gives best results. Try either 1mg EOD or 0.5/day if 1mg/day gives you sides; or simply wait a couple of weeks and see if the sides disapear. Hormones work slowly, and the body adjusts to hormonal changes even slower.

Also, you could switch from nizoral 1% to 2%. nizoral may dry out your hair and scalp; so either get a prescription for topical ketoconazole cream; or use a conditioner (A GOOD, NATURAL ONE) after washing your hair; maybe even apply some aloe vera into your scalp afterwards.

Keep the faith, man! Regrowth IS possible!
