Lol to people saying stay away from generics... Generics are EXACTLY the same as Propecia. The molecule is the exact same, it just doesn't have the same name. Thats like saying "omg Ibuprofen is so much less effective than Advil".

I do wonder why they say this. I suspect they want to push Propecia? I'm not sure how it is in the states but wouldn't surprise me if they are pushing Propecia and Rogaine due to some deal. Pharmaceutical companies normally try and get Doctors to promote their particular stuff, I suspect Propecia and Rogaine (since they had the patent on their chemical back in the day) got in first.

Listen man, do you know what a generic brand medication is? When a company (Merck in the case of finasteride) "discovers" or develops a medication, they patent it. No other company in the world is allowed to legally sell that medication (which is a FREAKING MOLECULE). Propecia= Finasteride (the scientific name of the molecule). Once the patent expires, anyone is allowed to develop and sell that molecule, but NOT allowed to use the "original" name Propecia.

IT IS STILL FINASTERIDE. The molecule is the exact same. There is nothing added to Propecia nor is there anything added to Generic finasteride. They are both just Finasteride. Same thing for Advil and Ibuprofen, or Tylenol and Acetominophen.

Or v**** and Sidenafil. They are the exact same down to every chemical bond down to every atom down to every electron. If anyone tells you a generic is less effective than brand name, you automatically know you cannot trust this person.

You are absolutely right WolfPack. Although direct compensation for Doctors in terms of prescribing medication is illegal, it is a well known fact that Doctors are "encouraged" to prescribe a particular medication. For example: a general practitioner who regularly prescribes Sidenafil (Brand name v****) will be flown out, with his wife, all expenses paid to a "conference" in the Bahamas, Florida, Cuba, etc. The company (Pfizer) will basically give the Doctor whatever he wants, and then show him a brief conference on their drug (v****). If he decides to prescribe v****, and not generic Sidenafil to his patients, the doctor will continue to get these advantages (like being flown out for 2 weeks to a beautiful island resort).


Regulation of doctor compensation is much more strict in Canada than in the US. If you want answers, see a doctor you know is not prescribing a certain medication. For example, ask a cardiologist if generic brand finasteride is less effective than Propecia. Do not ask him however if Lopressor is as effective as Metaprolol. You get the idea. Hope this ends the debate

Davepeters, calm down. I was on generic finasteride for the whole first year.. I'm not saying they don't work and yes I do know what they are... Some people react differently is all I'm saying. Different companies use different fillers possibly. Who knows.. I am just telling you what I have been told and you can even do a search about generics effecting people differently weather propecia or some migrane pill..

I've already established the fact that I'm probably a non responder, generic or not. When this all started for me, I did a lot of frantic searching and read that people were reacting terribly to dr. Reddys andlow and behold, I was using that. It's just a theory..

There is also the theory of reflex hyperandrogencity happening which could have been my case. But again, no way to prove it.

Haha sorry for being overly aggressive. Its just you are not the first to say this and it is actually very common. It really bothers me when people say Advil>Ibu etc etc. Didn't mean to let it out all on you my dude.

If the generic version of a drug does not work then it is a fake. I quit propecia due to a very specific side effect. I then took a generic brand and got the exact same side effect. They are defiantly the same thing. It's frustrating finasteride does not work for you. The people it does work for are laughing because they are saving their hair for less than a dollar a week. For others like me I have had to go down the route of more expensive options.

1) does scalp pain,itching,burning, all mean a bad reaction to finasteride?
2) when quitting, should I go cold turkey or should I ween off? And how?

Sorry submitted on accident..
Keep in mind, never noticed a real improvement of my hair during the first year and then at one year I had a massive shed, scalp pain, burning, itching, and thinning/recession. Thought minoxidil caused it (was on for two year) and was advised to drop it so I did. I'm still shedding but mostly from the top now which is odd to me.

If your gonna quit you could try a slow taper, 1mg > .5 >.25 >.25 EOD then maybe every third day till you are completely done. Your temple recession really wasn't that bad to begin with. Hard to tell how much ground you lost as the quality of the photos differ, but to me it does look like it has thinned some in the corner.

dude take dutasterid in your problem is gone
but dont take to much of it otherwise u could have similar experience
You have to block all types of 5α-reductase

Lennox. How long after switching dutasteride you noticed it works? You were a finasteride non responder?
