Here's an interesting poll I thought of: who ISN'T on finasteride??? If you are so inclined, please share your reason for not being on finasteride as well. And what treatments you are using in place of finasteride.

Thanks everyone.

Jeremy

P.S. Please no flames about how great finasteride is. I'm not bashing it or encouraging bashing of it - just want to get some honest feedback from some guys.

I might as well go first. I'm not taking finasteride because of some of the stories I've read here that suggest the possibility of long-term problems even after stopping finasteride. Probably not much of a chance of that happening to me, but if it did, I'd be pretty devastated, so I'd rather not risk it.

Not wanting to mess around with my hormones, I've decided to do the Bryan Shelton thing and use topicals only. I have to lay off the Xandrox for a couple of weeks because I was having chest pains, but at Bruce Lee's suggestion, I'll start again soon, gradually building up to twice a day applications. I'll also be adding Revivogen or spironolactone soon.

Really Bruce? Wow, you have given me hope from some of your posts in here. Can you tell me more about why off finasteride? I am just starting to thin on top and receed a little and so I was considering finasteride as my first step.

What do you suggest now? I have no visual signs of losing hair, but i used to have very thick hair and would feel ready for a haircut every 3 weeks, now a month after last haircut and it feels so thin still. Someone suggested nano shampoo, what do you think? Also, My hair during this time has seemed brittle or delicate, when i run my hair through, it feels like i need to use more conditioner...

Thanks

I am concerned about long term use of finasteride as it pertains to penile health and libido. I am picking up a few but interesting speculations from medical sources etc. Moreover, I don't like the long slow decline in libido that I experienced over the 2 yrs that I took the drug.

Topically I can recommend

Folligen Spray and Shampoo
NANO Shampoo
minoxidil 5%

I will be adding topical Arginine next week and have recently started on oral arginine 2 gms a day.

Also, check with Bryan and gourmetstylewellness.com who are both well versed on topicals.

I stopped finasteride, about 3 weeks ago now, after taking it for 9 months.
stopped due to feeling excessivley tired and ill a lot ofthe time, and having an antibody resistant abscess in my jaw which went on for the last 4 months.
feel much better now, and the abscess has practically gone, i can hardly fell anything there now.
I use topical finasteride sometimes, and occasinally take .5 mg like every 3 days.
I also tried topical spironolactone but stopped as its exacerbated my scalp psiorasis, which is so bad now, that when i comb my hair lumps of skin fall out, so im having to use hydrocortisone occasionally and alphosyl shampoo, ive stopped nizoral temporarily. my scalp is in a right state, it bleeds when i comb it, heaven knows what it would look like if i shaved my hair completley, also ive got random thin bits all over the front, where the psiorasis has stoped hair growth, im using regaine to try and grow the sh*t back, and that stings whenever i put it on, i need an entire new scalp FFS

I dont..I have been using revivogen and folligen for about 2 months and my hair has already began to thicken and regrow( my girlfriend is my brutal and honest judge ). I just started minoxidil last week only for my temples, as there is progress there but it is slow from applying folligen cream and I want to see if I can speed it up.
And just one post on finasteride, that involves penis disfunction is enough for me to stay away. No arguments wanted on this last comment.

I don't use finasteride because it's not good for your health

Seriously, if your head hurts and you want to get rid of the pain; are you going to cut your head of?
Finasteride is just the wrong way!

BRUCE!!!

Don't mean to hit you with the same question, but I thought you were okay with the risks involved with propecia?

How old are you? Do you already have a wife/serious girlfriend/sig other? Have you ever experienced side effects related to libido in your 2 years of taking it? And finally, For those of us still on finasteride, and not too concerned about the sides, do you think its efficacy makes it worth while?

I'm continuing regardless, but I'd like your opinion.

And btw, I bought a bottle of LArganine 2 weeks ago. I swear that is helping my libido. It's been calmed by the finasteride a little bit, but not too bad. However, I really think the LArg has raised it. Just my opinion.

Thank you, and good luck.

I am 54 and have been married for 19 years. I have one grown son. As I indicated in another post, my libido has been on a very slow decline that COULD be related to propecia or to general aging. I would not judge it as poor, simply not the trend line I like.

Also, if there is even a hint of penile tissue degeneration from long term use, I am not willing to risk it. I am moving to a topical DHT remedy but which one I am not sure of.

I think the risk/reward trade off is ALWAYS personal and I won't try to sway you either way. From the data, the vast majority of users have no side effects.

I don't regret my two years of using propecia (grew back my crown) but that is enough for me. The topicals will have to suffice or my hair will have to go.

I just started back up with Arginine this week and will top off at 2gms.

Good luck

Hey Bryan,

I am venturing into topicals big time. Think of revivogen but am open to other approaches (using folligen and minoxidil 5% right now).

Suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

I don't take finasteride. Only Rogaine 5%. I used propecia a couple years back for about 1-2 months. And it made me shed like crazy. Very very badly. I know people say that shedding is normal. But the amount I was shedding, I don't think that was normal at all. I started using Rogaine earlier in the spirng, was having good results then stopped(i know i'm stupid), I started up again last week of september of this year. I went through a shed when i started, but very minimal compared to what happened with propecia. I'm coming up on 3 months now, and I feel with my hair I have things under control by just using Rogaine, no real regrowth, just a bunch of little hairs, but as long as I keep the hair i have and maybe make my hair look and feel thicker i'll be happy, until something better comes out, whenever that is.
