Finasteride pros and cons.

It's been awhile since I've posted here and I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that I'm going bald. Last month I was an NW1 and now I'm an NW2. I have a very sensitive scalp (Head & Shoulders was my regular shampoo before my hair loss) and I guess that means that I have aggressive hair loss going on.

I have asked this question many times and I really want to see if finasteride has truly worked for some people.

From what I understand, finasteride has a chance (emphasis on chance) of stopping hair from falling out. I also know that there are side effects that come with it. Genital pain/numbness and man boobs are the more common ones. In order for the finasteride to work, it has to make your hair shed EVEN MORE for it to work and the hair "regrowth" doesn't happen until years later. I don't know if this is truly a good thing. Are you getting your hair back or do you just lose it all faster?

I am an nw2 and I have a good amount of hair left. My crown balding is noticeable and my temple and forehead hairline recession is not as noticeable thanks to me combing my hair down to the front. I am losing hair by the day and I predict that I will be bald in 3-4 months (best case scenario).

I have been very undecided about this product because I don't know if it is going to make things worse. If I go bald because of finasteride and have to wait for it all to grow back YEARS LATER (assuming you get all your hair back), is it even worth it? I don't mean to insult anyone here. I just want to know what would be the best course of action.

pros:

it can halt your hairloss for many years if you have male pattern baldness

effective for the majority of men who take it

cons:

Very unlikely to grow back any hair you've already lost

Small chance of side effects

Can be expensive, (but these days can be obtained cheaply if you know where to get it from)

Pros: is the only one effective
Cons: you start to play with your testosterone level which can be really dangerous.

For me.

Pro; thickened up my temple and temporal point that was thinning and boosted my confidence 10 fold. Cons; none atm.

Testosterone levels usually increase slightly in men who take Finasteride. How is that 'really dangerous' unless it was to excessive levels? T levels naturally vary between men anyway

Thanks guys for the much needed input. I checked in the mirror and I've noticed that I am an NW2 on the verge of becoming an NW3 (probably in two damn weeks). I have two questions:

1. I've read a thread and the people there said that working out actually makes your hair loss happen faster and cancels out the effects of finasteride. Is that true?

2. Is it true that finasteride makes your hair shed even more? In other words, will this medication make my hair fall out.

I read stuff like "It makes me shed hair even faster not worth it" and then I read stuff like "I'm happy because of finasteride". I don't understand this. Why isn't there a middle ground?

You don't need high levels of testosterone to see modifications. Is all about equilibrium. So if you start modify this you can see the side effects. My opinion is that each person should have a personalized treatment with finasteride. You can have the same positive effect also with 0,2 mg finasteride in the early stages. The study was 4 years ago.

It seems to me that finasteride is unpredictable, and you won't know how it works for you until you take it. I've been on here for well over a year and have heard more stories favoring finasteride rather than cursing it, but I can tell you that I am one of the unlucky ones who thinned out considerably shortly after starting it.
