Finasteride & Shedding

I have read many discussion here about shedding by finasteride.
It can be understood that shedding in first taking it due to lower the DHT level suddenly. But it seems occuring after several months with good result in some people. I feel confused.

In my situation, it works fine for me in the first five month with about ten hairs falling while shampooing. But after five months, the count of shedding while shampooing increase to about forty hairs(contains long and short ones). Many people here suggest not to discontinue taking finasteride, but shedding really let me feel frustrated and depression. Does anyone experience the same situation as me? How do you treat during the period? And how long does it last?

consider yourself lucky, its my third week and i'm losing around 100+ hair a day while washing and brushing. neck , shoulders covered with hair. and it wont stop, falling all over the place. i get the feeling i had t.e and i made it worse with taking finasteride. surely this sort of shedding cant be right. i took finasteride to stop my hairloss, not accelerate it by f*****g up everything i still had. my hair is now 50% thinner since i started finasteride 3 weeks ago without any exageration whatsoever.

Sorry, I don't believe it (50% thinner in 3 weeks). I don't want to cause extra anxiety by making this statement. It just does not sound plausible to me. Have you seen a doctor yet?

yup, i had the same thing on my temples/frontal hairline.. they went to sh*t starting after two weeks of finasteride use, and the heavy shedding lasting a good month... i lost about 50% density on front.. now on my 5.5 month, hairline has receded alittle, but i seem to have regained some density, however, my hairline hasnt grown back to what it was before finasteride... i'm still hoping....

same here, I have sheded heavily in the past 4 weeks. Been on finasteride since Feb 05.

I also apply xandrox 15 and xandrox 5% to my hairlline and temples...both have receeded a bit.

Thanks for your replies.
My sheding lasts about two months. It still continues now. Beside, I also use Xandrox15 at night for all scalp, and Spironolactone 5% in the morning for frontal hairline and vertex.
I think whether or not I stop taking finasteride because of the unexpected result. What's your opinion? Can you give me some advice?

i feel as if i've agravated t.e. but then i couldnt have had t.e for four years. been losing around 30 - 40 hair since 4 years now. and this summer it all starts getting visable. my hair was the sort that if i could slick it back you couldnt see anything even when wet. then this summer, within a period of a month , first the M shape forehead, then the excessive frontal and vertex thinning. and after the finasteride, the hairloss doubled. now even when its dry, you can see through especially the the front right side.

my dads 54 and he has hair.

is male pattern baldness assymetric btw? ...lose more hair from the right side than the left?

I think you can add Nizoral to your regime. Be patient. In general, it should take about six months to see result.

There are stories aplenty of shedding on finasteride without ever regaining all the lost hairs. Some will ask you to imagine how much worse things would have been if you had NOT taken the drug, but I don't think that is what is really happening here, certainly not in all cases. In my opinion it is equally possible you may aggravate and accelerate male pattern baldness by starting hair loss treatments before you really need them.

To my knowledge, none of the big 3 makes any mention of increased shedding at any stage of treatment. Granted, shedding makes a certain amount of sense. But when people have been shedding for months without seeing any regrowth I would then have serious doubts.

I feel confused. If I don't need taking finasteride or it doesn't suit me, why it can work fine for me in the first five months? It's strange. Can anyone give me some explanations about it, please? I really have no idea about whether or not I should continue taking finasteride???

i know this shedding sux, but keep going

Started propecia in Sept 2004 and shed like a freaking bastard during monmths 7 & 8. It was really depressing because the first 6 months went really well. However, recently the shedding has decreased and my hair is looking pretty damn good right now. What helped me deal during this shed hell was shaving my head.

So hang on my man and keep taking the propecia.
