I don't know of any drugs without potential side effects, but the chance is greatly reduced with local treatments. You'll have to try and see how you respond.

There is only one way to find out... You have to pause treatment for a while, and see if it makes any difference.

Personally, I now feel that the long-term side effects of minoxidil are dangerous and I have stopped using it.

Got so used to the puffy and dark eyes that I did not realize they were a side effect.

Had on and off depression issues for year and guess what? Once I stopped finasteride, they went away. And I only used topical finasteride, at least for the last 12 years or so.

I would do this but... I really REALLY do not want to stop my hair treatments... I think I am starting to see positive results and it would devastate me if I stopped...plus, practically everything I have read so for says there is no side effects... I've been using spironolactone for over a year now.

There is no drug without possible side effects. It all depends on the administration route, dose, and most importantly; your tolerance. Spironolactone is an anti-androgen, which means that if may affect your brain. Depression is a common side effect of androgen deprivation. Anxiety may be linked as well. However, a lot of things may cause these psychological issues, so if you don't want to pause treatment, you'll have to rule out everything else. If you can't do it, I'm sorry, but the only way to be completely sure is to stop treatment. Give it a week. All side effects should wear off, and it won't damage your hair.
