All,

Before I ask a bunch of noob questions that have been asked and answered a million times, I figured I would try and give something first.

As I have been lurking, I've noticed several posters complain about severe itching. I suffered from this for years (forearms and shoulders, mainly- but a little scalp irritation, too). I eventually went to a dermatologist and he put me on Claritin.

Before it went over the counter it was $3 per hit. Now one can obtain a 6 month supply for about $15. It's worth a shot if this is something you are a victim of. It sure saved my ***.

GoodGuy,

Yes. I'll do the "My Story" thing when I get some good photos and start my regimen.

Claritin is for allergies, right? Do you have scalp allergies?

Aplunk 1,

Claritin is an anti-histimine for allergies, yes. For the low price I believe it is worth a shot for those who are scraching away. Some of the remarks I've read regarding intense, deep itching sounded more like what I used to endure as opposed to general itchiness. However, I suppose if the itching is simply the result of a dry scalp, Claritin would be ineffective.

My scalp is definitely allergic to DHT! :(

Hi again, in my case, the itch was not caused by a dry scalp.

It was caused by a WET Oily scalp and dandruff, and by DHT.

I attack DHT with Propecia and oily scalp with some lotion like Tricomin or fabao and anti dandruff shampoo.

I suffer from itching on my back, legs and shoulders in the winter time. I think its just dry skin. Not that it has anything to do with male pattern baldness but I feel your pain...(never went to the doctor for it)

ang99,

Give that Claritin a try for a few days and see if it doesn't help. That deep, maddening itching makes pain seem preferable.

I first experienced it during humid weather in '92. It would occur once or twice a year. Over time it became more frequent until it was ultimately a daily thing. Humid and hot or dry and cold- it didn't matter. It wasn't psychological as it would flare up at the most benign times. The last straw was a football game where I was scratching my forearms to the point that I was drawing blood. I went to their med center and was given some Benedryll, which did the trick. I finally got off my can and went to a dermatologist. He diagnosed me with dermagraphism? (I think that was the word) and said that half the population suffers from it to some degree. A few days on Claritin and the problem was solved.

I have tried going off it a few times over the years to see if the condition had passed. Unfortunately, I itched like never before. No biggie, though. I have never noticed any side effects after five years and it's dirt cheap now.

OHHHH this is fascinating!!!

claritin is an antihistamine, that means it stems an immune response...and autoimmunity is something linked to inflammation of the scalp aswell as general male pattern baldness. so, by stemming the immune response, you're addressing the inflammation as well as the male pattern baldness?

Discuss.
