Hello,

My Propecia just ran out and it will cost me another $200 to refill it. I was wondering if there are any cheaper generic alternatives that are just as effective? If there are any, where can I get some?

Thank you

What country are you from?

In many, like the US and UK, your doctor can prescribe you the 5mg generic if you explain you plan to quarter it with a pill-cutter to a 1.25mg dosage.

Generic Finasteride on a real prescription costs next-to-nothing from your local pharmacy (UK) or wall-mart (US).

$9 for 4 months US
£4 for 4 months UK

Only order from the internet if your doctor literally refuses to write you a prescription.

I agree. Generic proscar from a local pharm is the way to go. However...if your doctor won't write you a script for it (like mine), then here's my suggestion:

http://www.4rx.com/online-pharmacy/cate ... pecia.html
I've been taking Finasteride from them for the last 3 years. My hair loss went from 200 hairs a day to about 25, so I know it wasn't just a sugar pill or something like that. They have online support for questions, and they told me this: "We have more than one supplier for the same medication and we ship out according to the availability of the stock. We carry generic Propecia manufactured by GenPharma, Sunrise, Cipla and Intas Lab Pvt."

If you're worried about budget, then I would suggest going for 90 1mg caps first. If you don't have a problem with sides then make your next order the 5mg caps and you can quarter them (1.25mg) to save some money.

2 money saving tips if you go there...
1: Let's say you want 90 caps. Add the 30 caps to your cart instead. It will take you to a checkout page, but it will also give you a chance to upgrade your order to 90 pills for $7 cheaper. Same goes for if you want to get 360, add 180 to your cart first

2: Use the promo code Q52EM37T during checkout for another 10% off. That's my promo code that I got for being a return customer, so feel free to use it :)

They also have a price-match guarantee, so you really can't go wrong :-D

Here's my story, so you know that I'm trying to sell you on the product...not the website :)

Thanks for that post and your advice.

1) Isn't Proscar for prostate treatment? I read somewhere that it's not recommended for hair loss?

I'll talk to my doctor about that, but I'm still concerned about taking a medication designed for prostate treatment instead of hair loss even though it has the same ingredients?

Proscar is 5mg of finasteride. Propecia is 1mg of finasteride. So, get the proscar and quarter it and you basically have 1 tab of finasteride. Saves you TONS of money in the long run.

Ok so my Dr. is okay with prescribing me PROSCAR but he did say that there have been NO studies confirming that PROSCAR works just as well as Propecia.

Is that something I should be concerned about?

No you shouldn't be concerned since it's the same exact drug and will have the same effect on your body. I'm baffled as to why this would even be a concern to your doctor.

As a side note, there have been studies on the use of various doses of finasteride for hair loss and this includes 5mg which is the Proscar dose. Your doctor is quite uninformed.

I feel like he is. When I asked him about generic alternatives, he said there were none. He made no mention about proscar or anything like that. I basically had to do all the research on this forum and suggest it to him. Are doctors good for just prescribing medication?

I am in the UK.

A few years ago I took a prescription from my doctor for finasteride and I mentioned the word 'generics' and he pretty quickly corrected me telling me that tthey didn't exist. That script (for one month's Merck Propecia (finasteride)) cost me around £45 ($75) and for about 14 months after that I did pretty well on finasteride that I ordered from online pharmacies (inhouse then Dr. Lee's). So, yeah, I think that doctors just quite simply aren't up to date with current studies in this field and I'm not that surprised as it is not a life threatening problem.

So, having read this thread I am going to ask for a proscar script as I want to get back on finasteride (having stopped when Dr. Lee's closed.

My question is, can anyone in the Uk confirm the average monthly cost of the script for Proscar? I just can;t believe that it is as cheap as £4 a month!

For now though I think I'm going to order Dr. Reddy's from United Pharmacies....alot of people seem to use and give positive reports about thier Finast (5mg finasteride)

Thanks

It doesn't matter what he prescribes. Even if he writes it for Proscar it will automatically be filled with a generic version unless he specifically indicates otherwise. (I'm assuming you're in the U.S.) Insurance should not be covering this since it is being prescribed off-label for a generally non-covered reason, although there have been reports that it had been covered by some guy's insurance. I personally do not even submit through my insurance.
