Girl told me "at least your not going bald"!

I was at this event yesterday evening at my university and I was talking to two other SGA senators--one guy and one girl whose names I will replace. John said he was getting cold and Mary said she wasn't cold. I said I was cold. Mary felt my hand and had the reaction people usually do. I explained that I have arthritis and my joints do not have good circulation.

She said "that sucks--you're so young. But at least you're not going bald." She then said "it seems like guys are losing their hair younger these days?" I didn't know what to say but it made me realize that, save for a few other young men who are also super distressed by a receding hairline (maybe like 2% of guys in college) NOBODY notices or gives a damn about my hairline.

Now, John at our age has a very receded hairline and significant crown thinning so I felt really bad for him because I think that is what made her think of baldness in the first place. He said it didn't bother him that much but also seemed to be a bit in denial because "blondes just have thinner hair..."

Unless you hairline is in the middle of your skull or you have crown baldness, few people are going to call you bald.

They probably know you look like a dork with a Vegeta's window peak, but they might attribute it to a bad hairstyle.

People who are not affected are just ignorant about baldness. As a kid, I would never guess you could lose your hairline first

While it is evidence that OPs situation isn't as bad as he thought, more importantly it illustrates perfectly the doomed perception people have about going bald.

Nobody ever thinks twice about baldness, huh? :thumbdown2:

yes

it seems in society that someone coudl complain all about their lifes problem, but it woudl almost always be followed up with " as long as you aren't going bald", it seems that going bald is seen as the worst social fate ever over anything, even running out of money or whatever.

"life sucks"

"at least you aren't going bald"

"that's true"

While waiting in line at a coffee shop this guy right behind me turns to his GF and decides to say, "If I ever go bald I would kill myself."

Either he was being extremely unsensitive or extremely stupid. I turned around and gave him a WTF look anyway. I'm sure that indirect comment was directed at me.

But of course I was just imagining all this because 1) I'm crazy and 2) nobody cares enough or is mean enough to say anything like that in reality.

U.man, these people who berate you are no doubt resentful of the fact that you look good(for being bald),are tall, and well built. They are insecure, and are intimidated by your presence, thus have too target your one visible flaw. BEING BALD!
I get the same for being just over 6ft 2/105kg,shaved head, goatee.People just do not like me.The way I deal with it now,is too act like I look, and walk around with a face on me.People then tend too avoid me.Treat people with the contempt they deserve.
It is a terrible way too be,and too live your life, but its the only way too get any respect, respect out of fear/hatred,because im damn sure i dont get any respect as a human being.

No U.man,i would be conforming too the typical stereotype of a big balded thug, then society would of won.Next you will be saying too be a bouncer. :thumbdown2:

But didn't you say that you give them what they expect from your stereotype by putting on a mean face and adopting a menacing attitude? I won't encourage you to become a bouncer but if you want to crack some numbskulls then you have my enthusiastic support Seb! A collapsed trechea is much more effective then trying to explain your emotions to someone who can't/won't understand you to begin with.

Lol,good points U.man.I act like i do now because of two reasons. One because im unhappy in life, and two because i've become too tired at being mildly embarassed by the way i look, and trying too get on with people.99% of people think im a piece of crap anyway(without opening my mouth),thus its human nature too then despise people, and be constantly on the defensive.
So i suppose in some ways im conforming too peoples perception of me,although ive found lately too my adavntage,as mentioned, people tend too avoid me,thus not having too put up with their insults.

Its interesting that you are offended by such comments.
I would have this mental comment in my head "B****, if hair is the only worthwhile thing in your life, you should go ahead and kill yourself, ending your miserable pathetic existence".

I would probably not say it aloud though :innocent:

Dude that is brutal I could never imagine saying that someone no matter the circumstances. People like that are f*****g garbage.......I heard a saying once "Those who matter wont mind and those who mind, don't matter." You can apply it to any situation you'd like.

You know I really feel bad about this story because as a kid and probably into my 20's I would get lot of these reactions, for several things I don't want to get into detail. The worst part was being told it is "all in your head"

I remember one time a group of girls were giggling at a distance and the kid I was hanging out just told me I was crazy. This continued until started to leave the place and suddenly one of the girls took me by the hands and just humiliated me in front of her friends. Later I asked him, so it is all in my head right?

I can't honestly said what changed. I still get those comments from time to time, but other than that, they are not from the same intensity. Maybe I look menacing? I don't know. A comment like the one you got I would just shrug it off, I was used to worst.

Okay so I guess I'm lucky that no one can tell I'm balding yet. But that luck is relative. I still have a crappy hair situation. Oh and I thought you might want to know that we were talking about a reading and, to describes the philosopher's ideas my professor invoked baldness. She said something like "for example, Anderson doesn't think that bald guys should be given money by society because they are at a disadvantage." And she says stuff like "just because one guy is bald and the other has a full head of hair." She also talks about how politicians are more popular if they have "good hair." lol

We didn't need to see that picture, really. I had a thought the other day that was about compensation for baldness. Not dressing flashy or making alot of money compensating... but what if bald guys were somehow irresistable to the hottest of the lesbians. It wouldn't work on naturally straight women and the lesbians would still be into women but would be willing to do whatever in bed with any bald guy. Guys with hair wouldn't do it for them. I would be okay with baldness under those conditions.

That's interesting that you say that bige. Did you have BDD growing up? Perhaps we both happen to be keen on the vibes other people send out. Sensitive. Did people used to call you paranoid? I used to feel bad about the word paranoid until I watched a movie called Strange Days. The villain in that movie (who had long hair btw) said and I quote "Paranoia is just reality on a finer scale." Although you won't reveal the source of your problem, thank you for posting that ^

I hate it when you think of the perfect comeback too late. I should have turned around and said, "Why put off to tomorrow what you can do today."

Yep, that would have done it. :hump:

He was just showing off infront of his GF,too make himself look big,and you inferior.Another worthless mutant who has done nothing with his life,no doubt goes down the "gym",thus thinks he is tough.
Unfortunately this type of behaviour is human nature, you were invading his "space",hence why he felt threatened and decided too be offensive(even though you did nothing, and were just standing there).
We really are a horrible species...
