Like a lot of young men losing their hair, I was heading towards a 'downward spiral' like people mention on the forum often, I was quite depressed and have had problems focusing on my body/school work. I had also been afraid to get my hair cut because I was afraid the baldness would be overly apparent (bald spots for example). I looked at my hair and after growing it out for ~4 months it was quite hideous and looked wild so I decided I have to get it cut. I went to get my hair cut and talked to the barber and said I'm losing hair and am worried it'd look real bad so to not take much off the top. I ended up with 3-3 1/2 inches of hair on top and balding was not apparent without close examination aka barely noticeable whereas when the hair was long it was magnified immensely and everyone could tell I was having hair thinning/loss/etc. I looked like an entirely different person and one of the ladies working at the barber shop exclaimed with a high pitch, "You look GOOD now!" It was pretty hillarious because I was doing my best not to burst out laughing and everyone in there kept staring at me until I left. I felt like I just came onto the set of The Swan's 'after portion' transformation.
Also, friends and family were shocked at the vast difference in my look since they could not notice the loss. Regardless, if it means anything, short is good. Also, I've been on finasteride for ~3-4 weeks and have noticed far less hair falling/coming out overall.

ha! i did the same thing a few days ago. my hair looked like total sh*t after growing it out for a couple months. i was sure that my thinning had progressed and was terrified of that damn barbershop but knew i had to get it done. i got it cut pretty short and was totally surprised at how much better it looked afterwards.

like you, my thinning is now pretty undetectable, atleast to the untrained eye. but holy hell, that haircut had to have been the most stressful thing i've done in a LONG time. i'm sure glad i did it though!

on sunday i was finally forced to get a haircut for my first day of work. i am nw2ish with frontal thinning and the barber couldn't figure out why the sides were so much thicker and longer than the top. he asked me if i had gotten the top cut too short or something. i was already embarrassed going into the barber and i replied "no, the top just doesn't grow as fast as the sides". he was like, "oh really? huh, that's weird". I just kept thinking, you're a f*****g barber man, haven't you heard of male pattern baldness??? but on a positive note, i think my hair looks a tad better after the haircut. god, i wish i could cut my own hair.

I cut my own hair and have done for about 4 years - I'm a badass barber.

Yeah mate,

The shorter the better when it comes to haircuts. You really do get what you pay for. Go to a good hairdresser, but don't spend over 50bucks, just get a decent hairdresser to cut your hair, be honest with them. They will help you through it and they can design your hair to cover up the bald spots, well the good ones do.

Tip for the wise, the hairdresser might try to sell you some snake oil, just tell them that you are on a regime and you want to stick with that.

I agree, short hair makes a huge difference. The downside to this is that I would have to get my hair cut at least once every 3 weeks or so in order to keep the shorter hairstyle looking fresh.

I don't have any pics yet, but once time has passed I plan on putting some together to see what everyone here thinks. I just had the hair transplant done a few months ago so it's still kind of early. The only thing I can say for sure is that the shedding has completely stopped, which is good.

Wow , I've actually been scared out of my wits to get mine cut as well. It's getting to the point for me as well, where it just has to get done. It's not even mainly that it looks too bad being long, but it's the fact that if I walk outside on a windy day, the top just all lifts up. That's just the worst damn thing that could happen, lol. I know with my hairloss it'll be viewable when short for sure, but I just start minoxidil so hopefully that'll fill in a bit.

Flowbee

Because of early mild thinning I hated going to get a haircut, and actually cut my own hair for the last 17 years or so... Long, with bangs. It actually looked fine, but with further thinning the bangs no longer worked... I started cutting it shorter and a few months ago got frustrated and bought some electric trimmers with the variable heads and shaved 1/2 inch on the side and back, 1 inch on top. It actually looked good, better than I would have guessed, and felt great... And, no more worrying about wind, rain, or which way the hair was laying. No great hair days but no more bad hair days. The benefit is that with a predictable haircut that I can touch up any-time I want in moments and will better be able to apply and judge the effects of the meds. I just wish that they had clipper guards slightly longer than 1 inch for the top... I guess that is what a flowbee is for : ) (thats the thing they sold in the eighties that used your vacuume cleaner to help cut your hair)

I too agree. I have never kept my hair short before I started losing it. But once it got thin (especially for me whose hair loss is diffuse) I find keeping it short looks best as once it gets longer it looks so much flatter. Nowadays I get my haircut every 2-3 weeks which was unheard of back in the no loss days. Plus I like that it gets me more used to how it will look once it gets very noticeable.

I'm probably the same age as you (19) and yeah, when my hair was long you could see most all my scalp and it seemed like noticeable baldness patterns would appear when the hair was short, this was not the case though. My hair does come out a lot less now than when it started some months back, I'd wake up to a good portion of hair or just notice hair dropping out all around me, but, lately, and with my hair short, I've noticed far less. This I am positive is due to my taking finasteride... I gauge my hair loss by frequency of noticing it around me and by how many hairs come out while showering. It's also very possible I was just in a shed period prior.. but it seemed like I lost all my hair at that one point and during the following months everytime I showered quite a bit came out and that's not the case now.. so I'm hoping this is a sign the pill is working for me but only time will tell. In the meanwhile, I do have restored confidence (x999) from when I was before... 8)
