Rice bran is a good source, so eat brown rice instead of white.
Red virgin plam oil is a great source of licopene and beta carotine, 3x as good as tomatoes and carrots. Also the highest source of tocotrienols.

I'd take a tea spoon of that each day, and maybe rub it on your head and face once a week.

The study that got my attention was posted on hair loss help. It was a smaller study, but showed that eating 100mg per day of tocotrienols caused men's hair to thicken by 42% in 6 months, according to hair counts in a certain part of the head. Very impressive. No natural sources give nearly 100mg though. Maybe I'd supplement, but for now just the brown rice and red oil. I eat lots of rice anyway, but its been white rice. I'll save it for bad economic times.

hi tbforever,

About the human study mentioned in CCS's post, it used Carotech's tocotrienol ingredient from crude palm oil source.

Here is a summary of that information:
Carotech was recently granted a US Patent No : 7,211,274 for tocotrienol in promoting hair growth.
Prof. KH Yuen and colleagues from the University of Science Malaysia conducted the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the effect of Tocomin®SupraBio™ Full Spectrum Palm Tocotrienol Complex on hair growth.
28 subjects were randomized to receive either 50mg of tocotrienol complex (Tocomin®SupraBio™) or placebo, twice daily after food over a period of 8 months. Hair count in the area (2 x 2 cm) of hair thinning and weight of hair (20 strands) were conducted at each visits.
At the end of the supplementation period, all subjects in the tocotrienol group had positive response, recoding in the number of hair in the evaluation area. An average of 41.8% increase in the number of hair was observed after 8-month tocotrienol supplementation, with :-

8 volunteers (40.0%) showed > 50% hair growth

1 volunteer (5.0%) showed 25-50% hair growth

9 volunteers (45.0%) showed 10-25% hair growth

1 volunteer (5.0%) showed < 10% hair growth

Supplementation with Tocomin®SupraBio™ Full Spectrum palm Tocotrienol Complex may promote hair growth and increase the number of hair in individuals experiencing hair loss.

i took the same tocomin suprabio supp for, hmmm maybe 4-5 months after i read this study.
I wasnt really a diffuse thinner so it's hard to tell but my hair possibly felt thicker overall. I discontinued about in march because i didnt feel it made a huge noticeable difference but could be a good addition to a diffuse regime, its pretty cheap aswell from iherb.com

FDA says if you take more than 400mg of alpha tocopherol, your risk of dying increases. It also says taking supplements above the rda does not help. But I don't know if they used the natural vitamin E, or the cheap stuff. Also, it is well known if you just take one of the 8 isomers in bulk, you displace the other 7. So I'm not surprised by their finding. I think people who megadose on stuff they don't understand probably are more likely to die.

So I stand by supplementing with a spectrum of isomers of the natural kind.

Do not just take tocotrienols without taking tocopherols to balance it.

Most of these studies on food by the FDA are purely based on probabilities.
