Goodbye Dutasteride

Kicked the habit after nearly 11 years on the stuff. After about 4 days off it I felt noticeably better, mentally and physically. It was certainly making me depressed. Not sure when that crept in. I don't think it always did that. Maybe it was from using generics. Maybe not.

Anyway, I'm pretty over using drugs to treat this now. dutasteride definitely slowed the loss down and I thought about going back to finasteride but I don't think I want to tamper with my body in that way anymore. Looks like I'll just have to accept my fate!

a brave decision so good for you. Acceptance is the key to happines I suppose

some questions:

why did you switch to dutasteride in the first place?

Did you consult a doctor about it?

And have you expereinced sides for the whole 11 years or only recently?

Hey Quantum Cat

I switched to dutasteride because finasteride didn't really seem to do much for me. I'm pretty sure the side effects haven't been with me this whole time I've been on it. I remember being off it for a month or so maybe 5 or 6 years back and didn't notice the same difference that I noticed recently. I never consulted a doctor about it except for about a year ago when I tried to get a script for it after it became available in my country.

I'm glad you're feeling better. The half-life of dutasteride is five weeks.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I do also have some questions though.

Where were you ordering your dutasteride?
Was your hair loss more crown, receding hairline or diffuse thinning?
Did you consider it worth the sides for the 11 years or prevention you achieved?

Thank you in advance for all your help.
It's great to see you are feeling better and happier in life, long may it continue.

Hey Theoman

Where were you ordering your dutasteride?

I've ordered the generics from United Pharmacies and Inhouse pharmacies. I've also ordered GSK Avodart from Melonipharma, QHI and PharmacydirectGB.

Was your hair loss more crown, receding hairline or diffuse thinning?

The temples were where it was most aggressive, overall thinning as well.

Did you consider it worth the sides for the 11 years or prevention you achieved?

Was it worth it? It's hard to say as my situation is a bit complicated. I wish I had been more consistent with the dosage because it would have yielded a better effect. Given that I only realized that I was having side effects from it (depression) very recently I guess it was worth it because as far as I know using it hasn't negatively impacted my health in any other way.

But, there is a chance it may have worsened or prolonged the other health problems I have (and I don't know if it has done that) but if it has then it wasn't worth it. If it hasn't and the only thing it cost me was money and some depression which didn't surface until very recently then I could say it was worth it.

I made a pact with myself that I would give it up at the 10 year mark regardless of how effective it was. I always had anxiety about the long term effects of taking it so even though my worry about hairloss might gone away while I was on it I had other anxieties about what I might be doing to my health in the long run. That makes it sound not worth it.

Would I recommend it to anybody else? That's a tough one. Today I would say probably not, don't go messing with your hormones like that. Another day I might give a different answer. I used to be a lot more careless with my health and not worry so much about prescription drugs. Now days I'm a bit more wary of them.

It's great to see you are feeling better and happier in life, long may it continue.

cheers!

Thank you for such insightful feedback.

I guess it really is up to the individual whether they want to take such powerful hormone-altering drugs.

If you had to recommend the best site and whether it be generic or Avodart, what would you say?

I'm sure your experience has helped many men, including myself.

Was depression your only side effect after 10 years of dutasteride/finasteride?
I hope you are feeling 100% by the new year

Yeah, I think so. I have had some sexual problems lately that people often report with use of finasteride and dutasteride but I'm 99% sure sure they are being caused by other health problems I have. But if they are being caused by dutasteride then it's taken a long time (9 years) for it to do that to me.

I hope you are feeling 100% by the new year

Thankyou :)

I can only really vouch for them in terms of customer service I guess. All of those listed were pretty good, prices vary from site to site of course. Never ordered something and didn't get it.

Many years back I did order some generic dutasteride from United Pharmacies (asI had done many times) and had a pretty bad reaction. Heaps of bladder irritation which took a few days to pass. I have no idea what happened there. Didn't take anymore of the pills they sent me and never ordered from there again. I knew many other people have ordered the same thing I did from United and never had the problems I experienced. Reading the wikipedia pages for the various Indian companies who manufacturer generic drugs has always made me really anxious about the generics. Their standards don't seem to be anywhere near as high as western facilities.

Its always a risk ordering anything off the net of course, even if you get the brand name stuff instead of the generics.

Do you mind telling me what health problems may have caused the sides? I just want to know what to look out for in the future

I guess it just depends where you are in your life.. for me until recently i didnt think it was worth it.. but now as a 26yo skiiny single guy whose hair is getting to a point where soon Ill have to shave it, I feel that the gamble to give it a try outways the depression I face every day. Even if it doesnt work well, at least its a placebo to keep my head up.. unless you straight out shave your head and accept it, balding is one of those things that just haunts you everyday because it literally NEVER gets better.

So for me I'm probably about to take the plunge, just to give me some hope through the remaining golden years of my single 20s.. after that, who knows..

So how did it keep you hair?)
You were Norwood(?) when you started it and now what Norwood(?) are you?

Could we see some pictures, how old are you now?

Honestly quite an accomplishment.

Probably NW1 or 2 when I started. By the time I came off probably norwood 3A maybe. The only areas of my hair that are actually bald were my temples. Never had baldness at the crown, just thinning there.

I got slack with photos. I did take some over a period of about 2 years or something. I sent them to another gourmetstylewellness.com'er who wanted them. If I can bothered I'll post some up. Should have really been stricter about photo documentation but it was always a pain to get consistent looking photos and I'm a pretty lazy person.

I'm early 30's now.

There is one other guy here who has been on it as long as I have. He doesn't come around here much anymore unfortunately, would like to know how he's getting on.
