Does anyone know if it is easy or difficult to get a prescription for Finasteride and/or Minoxidil in Australia? Are the GPs inclined to advise against it and not write a prescription or are they generally happy to do a quick examination and write a prescription?

If the latter is the case, can anyone recommend a GP for this in Perth, Western Australia?

You don't need a prescription for minoxidil in Australia. You can buy "Regaine" at the pharmacy. However, it's three times more expensive than ordering it from the USA, because everything is overpriced in this isolated backwater. You can also buy 1% or 2% nizoral at the pharmacy.

For finasteride, the first doctor I went to was an idiot. He said they would first need to order expensive blood tests to see that i wasn't losing hair due to deficiencies. Then, it doesn't matter anyway because baldness is genetic. He said in studies, one third of people benefit from finasteride, one third show no difference, and one third improve, so it's a waste of time. He also said finasteride is for prostate cancer, it's a 5mg pill, whereas propecia is the name used for baldness. He said some dermatologists recommend minoxidil instead.

Second doctor I went to was like "yeah, you have temple recession", he wrote the prescription for finasteride 5mg and said i should buy a pill cutter. He said side effects are rare at the lower doses.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I believe you can buy the 5% Minoxidil from the pharmacy without a prescription, but I found that didn't help me very much. I've been using 7% Minoxidil + 0.01% Retinoic acid, which I believe you can get from a compounding pharmacy, but I think it's prescription only right?

But thanks heaps for sharing your GP experience as it will probably encourage me to try a 2nd one if the first is reluctant.

Cheers.

Does anyone here know of any decent doctors/dermatologists in Melbourne who will give a finasteride prescription(No Ashley & Martin or Advanced Hair Loss Studio). Because the derm I have recently visited is refusing to prescribe me it and instead wants me to go on oral minoxidil.

Any GP can prescribe finasteride, you don't need a derm.

Since you live in Australia, you might just order a topical minoxidil+finasteride from minoxidilmax.

Another option is the S5 Plus cream from this website.

If you only have the 1mg version prescribed and can't or don't want to get a 5mg version, just do some calling around. I believe the generic version of 1mg Finasteride is available. I just buy generic stuff and it works very well.
